Hi, my grandson, Jaden who is 4 has been in Karate for a month and he love's it. I told his CF team and they all said that was a great thing for him. His Mother and I did ask if there were any other kids with CF first though, which there were not.

Well the whole story is i am practising karate for a few years now and my children have been watching me and now they want to practise themselves too. I asked my son's doctor if its ok and he told me that usually people with cystic fibrosis should avoid martial arts ,cause they have to do with "blows" and because a punch or some other blow may cause a bruise and the kid may not be able to perfom his Physiotherapy...His answer sounded so unconvinsing to me..is there is something else that causes problem and he's not telling me??

I would get another opinion. as long as there are not other CF kids in the class with him, I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be a great thing to do. what do you mean by "blows"
karate for most little kids is not full contact but a good form of excericse and discipline

Um, kids can receive "blows" from just about any sport. As Ashley correctly pointed out, martial arts for kids is pretty no-contact. I would think that would be a safer bet than something like gymnastics (which I did when I was young and never received any serious "blows") or even running (kids fall sometimes). Tell your doc to grow a pair and stop discouraging exercise.

My eight year old son with cf, has a green belt in karate. He started at age 5 and has loved it. He also has a g-tube. He is fearless and karate has taught him discipline and self control. He is naturally good at it and his coach has been so encouraging to him. His coach has also had two fund raisers for the cystic fibrosis in honor of him. Make sure you communicate to the coach of his cf, but they'll love it!

I did Tang Soo Do when I was younger after my dx with no problems. I was in boy scouts and took swimming lessons and was a very active kid I lived outside practically.

Our daughter (almost 10) is an Orange belt in Okinawa Kempo (Karate do). She has being doing it for over 2 years now. She is a fish at the pool with 'No Fear". I have her and the rest of my family in a running program. She almost at the 1 mile mark (.875 in 10 min). Why? Because based on everything that I have read out about Csystic Fibrosis? You have to own your body and get at your optimal physical shape. Almost to the point of a Fitness Nut/Gym rat. The other options off course, are treatments, medicine, etc. I have read articles from individuals male and female who are athletes. Triathletes, marathon runners and so on that they only do the vest on average once or twice per day. Their PFT are at almost 95 or better. Even one guy here at this blog who did P90X and brought his PFT up. Do your homework, be the judge and figure out what is best for your child. Our daughter, because is a Orange belt goes toe to toe and spar with anybody in the Dojo, boys or girl. Whether she wins or gets her butt kick, it doesn't matter. She is taugh to never quit and to never give up.We always wanted for her to have normal life. And she is....
