hi. my name is elisa and my dd was just Dx with cf yesterday. we posted over in the newly Dx and found lots of support already.

my question is, what do we have to do in our home and for our dd to keep her from getting sick?

what to you have to clean in your house daily? (phone, door knobs etc) how often? do you change clothes more often to keep germs away? do i have to mop more?

i guess im just unsure of just how much MORE cleaning do i need to take on? can i keep a relativly normal house or do i need to keep like a hospital grade sterile environment? i want to keep her as healthy as i can but this is all so new and i dont know much about it... i figured while she is still in the NICU (for another week abouts) i can start figuring out the cleaning thing and getting used to the routine

TIA

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. That's always a blow to a family. I'm glad you found this site, though. It's very helpful.

My home was never overly clean growing up. My mom was of the opinion that kids need to be exposed to dirt and germs to build an immunity. That's not to say it was dirty, but it wasn't any more clean than your average home. While CFers are definitely more delicate, you don't need to overprotect your child. Now that I'm on my own, I take certain precautions: I vacuum at least once a week, preferably two. I mop once a week, bleach all sinks, the toilet, and the bathtub every weekend, dust at least once a week, use 409 on all working surfaces daily, keep plenty of mold-combating weapons, and keep masks on-hand to prevent inhalation of the chemicals I use. I also wear a mask when emptying the litter box (can't live without the kitties!) About 2 years ago, I randomly picked up a completely abx-resistant fungus, and this has made me especially wary o molds and fungus. I do laundry weekly, but I don't change clothes more often than normal (except underwear, like every CFer). I also like to clean the phones and doorknobs, as you mentioned. Keeping your dd's toys clean is good, as well.

Since I am a bit controlling when it comes to housework, I consider this all normal up-keep. Every CFer is different, as well. I was a relatively healthy kid, so exposure to public school, the outdoors, pets, etc. was not bad for me, but that is not the case with everyone.

Good luck!
