Hi Everyone

I'm trying to get more strict with myself and my treatments.. I find it hard to stick to a routine and I'm trying to figure out some ways of keeping compliant and on schedule.
I would love to hear any advice that you may have, such as keeping a treatment journal, or maybe doing meds while watching a certain tv show.??? Any ideas are appreciated!
Thanks!

Hey Jenn!

I used to be HORRIBLE at doing my stuff but I have gotten alot better recently. I do most of my nebs in the car before and after work so that takes care of that. I also do one when I wake up in the morning so when my alarm goes off I know it is neb time. I take my orals and vitamins at home before I leave for work...this took time to remember...I leave them in the bathroom or somewhere that I will definitely see them everyday. The weekdays are easy, weekends get hard. But if you leave things where you will see them then it will trigger your mind to do them. My vest sits in the living room STARING at me so I can't miss that...now it is just making myself do it not remembering to do it.

I am a very structured person so having a scheduled routine really helps me. But it takes a while to get into a routine...I think I read somewhere like 90 days or something! Anyway...just leave post its around the house or leave all your stuff out so it reminds you to do it...You will get better over time trust me!!

Hey Jennifer...

I used to have the same problem. When I was in college, I NEVER did my nebs. I just thougght that it took up too much time and I didnt want to have to bother my room mates with the time and/or answer random questions of ppl who may be entering the room or hearing the noises. And that was back when all I had to do was Dnase! Yes I know, I was pathetic. The only lung treatment that I did was chest PT...b/c I had someone who would come in and 'beat' me...lol.

I can tell you now though, I definitely learmed my lesson. I finished college in December and since then I think that I have improved to near 90%. I dont do Pulmo anymore, I just do Hypertonic Saline. Basically, I cant skip a dose of the HTS...or else I cough up a buttload of oysters...(the day I skip and the next day when I do the HTS). Its almost as if my body knows that I skipped and thats its way of saying...GET YOUR BUTT IN GEAR!!! hahaha...Honestly though, I like that way, b/c it forces me to do the saline every day. I know that if I do it, I will cough during, but will be practically non coughing the rest of the day.

As for my routine...I wake up do a puff of alb first thing, then usually shower, so that by the time I am done with that, the alb is in my system and ready for the HTS. I go downstairs take my prilosec (which has to be a half hour before eating), then I do the saline. While I am doing the saline, instead of doing the whole tv thing and having to turn up the volume, I use that as my computer time. I try to limit my computer time, so the HTS time is my time on here. I browse the forums, read blogs, check email...

As for my pills and enzymes shizz...I keep that in a very strict order. haha....If I dont take my enzymes first, then Motrin, then Zyrtec, then vitamins, My day is like all out of sorts...hahah. My pill stuff is always just done with meals, so its not hard to remember.

Hope you find some good ideas here!

This is what works for me. Upon waking I get on my treadmill and walk for one hour at 3.7 miles with an incline at 3%. Then I get to my nebs and vest treatment. If I do not do them first thing then I might talk myself into skipping the treadmill...that's why I do the treadmill first. I watch tv while on the treadmill...usual a show that I have prerecorded from the night before...then I can skip through commercials and the time seems to go faster. While doing my nebs/vest I do emails and also come to my favorite website "cysticfibrosis.com" and go through the posts. I am doing my nebs/vest right now as I write this.

What I find hardest to do is the evening treatments. I try to begin them between 6-8pm knowing if I plan to do it later than that it might not get done because I will get too tired or engrossed in something else.

I keep my advair inhalor visible in the kitchen along with my vitamins so that it is easy to remember to take them.

It is hard to remain faithful but seeing good test results at check ups is really motivating and having a family that understands the importance of doing cf treatments routinely is a big bonus. Something nice my husband does is when we pick out a hotel or vacation spot he always make sure that their is a gym available so I can get my treadmill routine in and a refrigerator for my meds.

Now with all that being said I never plan to skip any treatments and never ever skip a morning one but I will admitt that from time to time...maybe once or twice a month, an evening treatment will be skipped. Again I never plan for that to happen but maybe an exhausting day or something totally unexpected comes up. I always plan to do my best...but I am human and I take responsibility when I choose to skip.

I hope you find a routine that works for you.
