Keeping Up Your Treatment Routine

Bedtime is the easiest thing to keep me in routine. During the school year its much much easier then Summer.

I read Jazz a book, tuck her in at night then come out do my nebs, vest. As I clean the nebs etc I make the coffee for the next morning, let the dog out & lock the doors, get my water for the night & take night time oral meds etc.

In the morning during school year I get up have my coffee, do my nebs, get ready, wake Jazmine up, make sure she is ready, eats etc. Take her to school. Come home do my vest. Then I eat take my oral meds.

During Summer its hit & miss on timing, but I still remember to do it all. The routine is the same just the times are different.

The only problem I have is if I am on something that requires being taken mid day. I usually am puttering or running errands in that time frame.

As I said its all based around my sleep schedule, but I also dont have to fit it a work schedule in addition so its a bit easier for me!

I have a big week long pill box that I have all my meds in, and it sits on my kitchen table (I bought the "child resistant" one), so it is right there where I eat most of the time. I also try to keep a stash in a pill box (I got a nice, multicompartmented one from cf services for free with my order) along with some Advil and tums-lol- in my purse.

I also do my nebs and vest while online, both morning and night. Recently, I decided that it couldn't hurt to put on my vest (on a comfy setting!) if I got online during the day, either . I do mine first thing in the morning- before or after breakfast, depending on how hungry I am, and then do my evening ones as soon as we put our daughter to bed.

I always try to at least do my Xopenex and my HS before I get my day started, and I got a Pari Trek S so that I can do them in the car. This has helped a lot! I don't feel as rushed in the mornings (especially on days when I go swim), and I can carry it around and do my Xopenex while I am getting ready at home, and finish my HS in the car. Then, I do my vest and Pulmozyme when I get back.

I also have an Accapella (and am working on getting a Quake) that I can take with me in the car, if it's a long day out and I am running late. That way, I can do everything but the Pulmozyme in the car (but have been known to do that too if I am going to be gone most of the day- I figure, something is better than nothing, and it is a rare occurance ).

I keep my Advair diskus in the bathroom next to my toothbrush- I do it before I brush my teeth, morning and night.

I also have learned how much better I feel if I make time to get all my treatments done, and have made them a priority. I am at the point now that I get angry if something looks like it is going to interfere with my treatments, and do everything I can to work around it -lol.

Hi Jennifer, Here is my routine...I give myself a few minutes to wake up .. then i do my vest/neb ( i find if i don't the day can get very busy and i may skip) while i'm doing my a.m. treatment i pray ... after my shower , i do nasal irrigations/flonase/advair ... i keep all my oral meds/vitamins in sight (drives my husband crazy) i have to do that so i will remember..i do my p.m. vest/neb treatment between 7-8 p.m. i try not to do it to late because if i get to tired i may skip..everyday is pretty much the same for me.. I sometimes run into problems if i have an early dr. appt. so i try to schedule them at an hour that will be best for me to finish everything first, and still have time to get to the appt. Also, going on vacation/visiting can also be hard to deal with.. I cut myself a little slack at these times, but do the best i can... (i've gotten better w/ this because i realized my health depends on it) I hope you got some good ideas, stay well and God Bless you... joni

hey jennifer,

when you say you're having touble with your routine, i assume that means to you CF routine and that you have a lot of other routines that you are able to keep up. point is, making your treatments happen at the same time every day makes it a no-brainer. i do my vest when i wake up (after i've made my coffee of course ) and before bed; i do additional treatments only when i need them.

while i do my vest, i generally fiddle around online or read a book...these things distract me and help the time go by. i think tv and movies are both a great idea, as long as you're not so distracted that you compromise your treatment. (ex. forgetting to keep coughing durring vest.)

it sounds silly, but i have a calendar i keep, and when i exercise that day, i put a sticker on it. everyone loves stickers! sounds childish, but it really keeps me going and lets me see the time i've put in over the course of the month. maybe that would work for you and your treatments?

good luck!
