Kidney failure from vanco

hey there.

I've never heard of kidney failure but when I went on IV vanco for the very first time, I felt like I had a bladder infection...I felt like I had to pee, it hurt to pee when I actuallty had to go, my lower back just hurt in general. I had asked my nurse if my urine sample had shown any sign of infection and she said it only showed some mild dehydration. After explaining to her my symptoms, she told me that vanco can really reek havoc on your kidneys and to drink lots of water to flush them out while on vanco. Every time I'm on vanco now, I drink water like it's my job. My fiancee and mom make fun of me now for the amount of water I drink while on vanco...they tell me I'll float away, lol.

Just thought I'd share my kidney knowledge and experience with vanco.

I've had kidney failure 3 times. Once was something called TTP and 2 times from cefapine. The docs thought it was Vanco one time since it's known to have the side effect, so next time they had me on tobra and cefapime, same thing, got rhabdomyalisis (which is very painful) and subsequently mild kidney failure. Both Vanco and Tobra are known to have the rare side effect of causing kidney failure, cefapine is not, but it obviously can happen.

When I got kidney failure from TTP (simalar to HUS which is caused from ecoli) my creatnine was up to 9.6. Had plazma apheuresis (however its spelled) for a month and dialysis for a couple days. Also had to have a bone marrow draw because the actual cause of the failure was unknown. My creatnine is relatively normal now, but on the elevated side for someone my size and age, usually around 1.4- 1.7

I was anemic for about 2 years after the first failure, no long term probs from the other 2. Ever since the first failure though, I randomly get super fatigued and fevers, as well as have severe sleep problems (night sweats and fevers) which cant be pinpointed.

That's interesting, Kristoffer- I have had those symptoms the last 2 times I was on Tobra and Vanco...they couldn't explain it either...sorry to go OT, but I wonder if they ever checked my kidney stuff- they will next time! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Ok, I sholud probably clarify, first. You guys are talking about Vancomyacin, right? Emily was on it when she had c-diff. Is that why you are all taking it?

Anyway, they suspected at one point that she might be going into kidney failure while on the vanco because she bloated up terribly and retained fluids for weeks! They did tests, however, and determined that her kidneys were fine, she was just having a bad reaction to the IV saline they had used becasue she was dehydrated (this was prior to determining that she had c.diff.)

I'm interested to learn that there is a connection between vanco and the kidneys. Makes me wonder if there was more to oher problems than we knew.
