Kidney Stones

My 9 year old son had 3 kidney stones in October and he spent a agonizing week in the hospital while they tried to find some pain meds that would even begin to reduce his pain. Truly the worst pain I have ever seen him in and my son has an abnormally high threshold for pain. After that experience we thought all was fine, but when we went for a follow-up ultrasound last week to just verify they were all gone we found out he has one again. Not sure if it's one of the October ones or a new one.Anyhow, my question for those who have had kidney stones is - can this just exist in his kidneys forever and ever without it causing problems or is it destined to come out? I feel like the other shoe is going to drop at any minute and would love to hear from someone who has had one for a couple years and it never caused a problem because I don't know if I can stand seeing him in that amount of pain again.

I had a couple for 2 years...one in each kidney. I had them destroyed through lithotripsy. It was completely painless, and only required an out-patient procedure, plus a day to recover from the sedation. I recommend it to prevent having to pass the horrible things!

Hi Pam,

Sorry your son is prone to kidney stones, they suck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">

I have had them several times and from my understanding they just keep getting bigger , until either passed or blast ..

I recently had Lithrotripsy done 3 times in a row.. Previous to that i passed 2 huge stones, we were all pretty amazed that these 2 stones actually came out !!!

The stones were analyzed and i am now taking potassium citrate .. I hope this keeps them from forming..

Were your sons stones analyzed?

It is very painful to pass them , so my heart goes out to him and to you having to see him in pain..

Take care and God Bless you guys . <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> joni

Why would anyone let a person lay in the hospital for a week passing stones? Why didn't they do surgery?

I have had numerous stones - some I passed after several agonizing hours and misdiagnoses. Some I have passed quickly without too much trouble. I have also had the lithotripsy surgery (blasting them into smaller piece so they pass without pain). I have also had the surgery where they go up inside the ureter and get the stone and remove it -- this is what they should have done for your son, if a person doesn't pass them in a day or less, they should have removed them surgically.

Yes, stones can sit in the kidney without pain, as long as they remain attached to the wall or are not moving around and getting into the uridure (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder). He should be evaluated, stones should have been sent to the lab and they should know what type of stones he is forming and why.

He should never have to endure an entire week of pain again! If there is a next time, insist that they do surgery to remove the stone. They can also do x-rays once a year to keep an eye on things, if they see stones, they can also do the lithotripsy surgery prior to the stone dropping.
