Kidney stones

I totally feel your pain. I too am a fellow kidney stone sufferer, the last attack was not even a month ago. I also have multiple stones in both kidneys. The one I just passed was 6 mm, it was very painful and yes, it id hurt worse than childbirth with pain that brought me to my knees and to the ER begging for death or Dilaudid. That sucker took 4 days to pass. I take a mild diuretic to help flush my kidneys, HCTZ and potassium. I really can't avoid calcium as I am osteopenic and need it. Drink lots of water is what they say.
Hugs, Jenn

I have had multiple kidney stones in the past 10 years (started when I was 18 yrs old). I know have my biggest, which are 6mm, one in each kidney. I am planning to have lithotripsy done in December to break them up. I do not want to pass these ones I don't think. I have passed 10+ over the years with only 1 trip to the ER so far.

Has anyone else with CF had kidney stones? I'm working on at least my third one since this summer and I'm sick of it!! I have read that people with CF are at risk for them because of excess calcium oxalate. I saw Urologist for it, and via the ct scan, they saw numerous stones - the largest being 6mm in size. He told me to take UROCITK. Anyone else taking this? I have increased my fluid intake but keep getting these things. They are awful.

As a side note since I was severely vitamin deficient, I started taking my vitamins religiously (source cf and vitamin d3) since this past spring. I find it interesting that the stones started soon after the increase in vitamins.</end quote></div>

I have had between 10-12 calcium oxylate stones in my life, starting at 18. The largest was 9mm, which shut down my right kidney. I can empathize with the pain. I've had several different procedures done to get rid of various stones, and usually end up with a stent in my ureter to assist the passing. If I have a stent, they usually give it 4-6 weeks before blasting them. I currently have stones in both kidneys but have no symptoms - probably because they are just hanging around in my kidneys.

The only thing I have done different is increase water intake, but due to a relatively newly diagnosed kidney disorder (a kidney hormone issue), I have to watch my fluid intake.

I have never heard of Uroctik, but do be careful with supplements. I know that women with CF have a propensity for bone loss, but too much calcium could theoretically be binding with the excess of oxylate in our systems. I haven't found a balance yet, but I haven't had a stone in three years or so.

Good luck to fellow sufferers! They can really be debilitating.

Thanks for all the responses, at least I dont feel alone in this CF and Kidney stone issue! Misery loves company <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">)
And Christian, with that 18mm stone, you are a hero! wow! I passed a 6mm and thought I would die when I got to the ER.
Anyway I have not started the Urocit-k that my urologist recommendeed. It is a combo of potassium and citrate and is meant to help with the stones most of us with CF get - the calcium oxylate stones. Basically I dont have enough citrate in the urine to break down the calcium and this is suppose to help. I am always always hesitant to start taking yet another something! But I am beginning to think I better take it - or I may just continue to suffer with more kidney stones. He also said I could drink a lot of orange juice (since it contains the citrate)... But alas diabetes allows me only so much of that sort of simple sugar.
I don't take calcium but it is in my diet quite a bit and it will have to stay in my diet for my weight and bones.
Also I'm wondering: JustDucky what is HCTZ?
Thanks again everyone.
