Knowing where to begin...

So I am trying to figure out how to make this short. I have a 15 month old son who has been sick for a good portion of his life.....It seems like it has been one thing after another. Just wondering about what we are seeing for symptoms.....He is currently being treated for asmtha because he has a chronic cough, acid reflux, he is lactose intolerant, he has trouble with his bowel movements more in the way of constipation and massive bowel movement once they happen(almost never formed stool). He also has massive gas spells which leave him bending back, crying out and are only relieved with passing gas which sometimes takes anywhere from 15min-to and hour for him to get rid of. It is also interesting after doing some reading my son who is fair skin also has a yellow tint on his hands and bottom of his feet--so much that my pediatricians RN has asked us if he eats alot of carrots, and sweet potato which he does not.

We saw a pulmonologist on Friday and he wants to do a sweat test next month to rule CF out..this has really taken my husband and I both back because it was nothing that we had given any thought too given that we thought that we were dealing with a child with asmtha and that is all....

Just wondering what peoples thought are in regards what we should be doing from here, and if any of these symptoms are familar? Any suggestions of questions/concerns that we should bring back to the doctors next month--think I am going to have trouble waiting until next month for the test.

Thanks for reading!

Welcome! I know how stressed you must be having to wait for the test. How is your son's weight? It is good to rule out cf in your son's case. He could very well not have cf, but you want to make sure.

Constipation can be a sign of cf. My nephew has cf as well as my children. My nephew's main problem as a young child was constipation. As far as the liver concerns that I noticed you wrote about, you can ask for your son's liver levels to be tested now (blood work). I know that GGT is one of them that can be high. That would help you know if he is having liver problems.

Another (totally unscientific) thing that many cfers have in common is the skin on their hands and feet wrinkle up very quickly in water like after a long (or short!) bath. Have you noticed that with your son?
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 7 and Jack, 5 both with cf, Grant, one month, no cf

well, i hate to say this but EVERYTHING you have stated is exactly what my sophie has with her cf...the acid reflux, constipation, then massive stools, severe gas pain, etc...if it is cf, its definatley not the end of the world, even though I KNOW!!! you will feel this way. I felt that way 14 months ago! But there are alot of great meds to help and research is getting closer to a cure each day! Another symptom is excessive sweating and their skin tasting very salty when they sweat...were you screened as cf carrier when you were pregnant?? Not all doctors do this regularly, but it is getting more common.

My sons weight has been okay....although it has started to stabilize and he has not been gaining like he was, although I do believe that he could be at the age where he is moving more and this could cause the gain to stabilize but I am keeping a close eye on him. He is 32 inches, and weighs 24 lbs......I will have to check the bath thing tonight when I get him in the tub.

It is good to know about the constipation....and about getting the liver tested.
