He should also get tested for lack of Alpha-1-Antitrypsin. Its also a genetic disease and it is possible to have both cf and Alpha-1-Antitrypsin deficiancy.

Uli has a good point. Both CF and alphaone run in my late husband's family. There is treatment for the alphaone stuff.

Could you give me more info on alpha one (if it's not a bother)? Two of my aunt's have alpha one... one is in pretty bad shape, but it never occurred to me that I would see it come up on a CF forum. I'd love to learn more about it and how it goes along with CF.

Well both are genetic diseases, but on different genes. Both affect the lungs and the liver and both need different treatment.
As the symptoms can be similar it might easily happen that a doctor doesn´t think of testing both, especially if one of the diseases is already proved.
