fyi Yes I consider myself to be living green. Not just in health related things, but in other aspects as well.
I am not one of the nutty ones-of course I use air conditioning and drive my car despite emissions.
My philosophy is generally if it doesn't inconvenience me greatly or affect my cf negatively why not do it?
Ex-I use canvas shopping bags -they cost 50 cents at walmart and that doesn't inconvenience me at all. Also-we are currently renovating our house and when it came time to decide which insulation to chose we went with a green soy based insulation-sounds nuts, huh? But its cheaper, and guess what?-turns out that standard insulation fumes contribute to roughly 20% of allergy suffers...so its small things like this that I try to read up on and use in my life.
As for health related things I have been doing it natural for years. Starting with how my mom raised me in regards to cf and now. I have spent alot of time learning about nutrition and vitamin/natural supplements, homeopathy (which up until the 1950s was respected and practiced as part of western medicine, and in other countries still is). I consider all these things part of my routine cf care, and my doctors respect alot of it as well.
Our family eats organic when possible-probably 70% of our diet is organic, and focused on fresh organic fruits and veggies. Basically what your mom always told you-an apple a day....
I also get regular acupuncture and use Chinese Medicine-from an MD...not a 'quack' but a doctor of chinese medicine and herbology. Interestingly in China and the east, acupuncture and chinese herbs are as respected as "western" medicine is here. They use both. If you go to a doctor with a problem it will be suggested that you go to herbs and acupuncture first, then go to western medicine.
Of course there are not guarantees in life but it is food for thought. I feel, if it helps even a little...why not do it?
Along with all these things I am extremely compliant with my meds and pt. I don't throw out my meds bc I am organic or natural. You have to be balanced.
I don't normally comment on things like this but I figured this applied to me and if someone really wanted info on natural living, I think I'm a good but balanced patient of it.
As far as vaccines go, I understand the poster is a mom w cf, not mom of cfer...however, just for sake of commenting, if I had a child w cf, I would vaccinate. I do not believe that if you don't vaccinate that you will get the illness...but I do think that if you make the informed choice of not vaccinating or delaying...you must accept the responsibility of protecting your child as much as possible (ex- not traveling to Guam with an unvaccinated child...hah you laugh, I know someone who did this....) and the possiblity that the child may contract an illness.
I have decided to delay my daughters vaccines. Instead of starting at the 1 month mark I started at 6 months, and will continue at 1 year but breaking them up individually. I also accept that this takes more time out of my schedule and more sticks for her. But to me it is worth it for sake of protection. Hey, I lived after all.....
Another thing that I have always loved and use alot is the book called Prescriptions for Natural Healing. It is a natural/supplement bible. Even with a great section on Cf.
