low vitamin D

<br />Wow that is a lot of vit D. I take an extra strength Citracal (500iu of vit d) a day. I can see why they want to get you as high as possible if all that supplementation only gets you to 29.

Normal Vit D level is between 30-100. I also just had mine checked and I am at 29. I take 50,000iu a week-so also a high dose.
Never heard that changing lights could help...I know sunlight does.

Mine at 11, but I will be tested in another month to see if it raised. Yeah, Alaska winters do have an effect. But the summers! I can stay up til 2 in the morning and the sun is shining again a few hours later. How I enjoy the summers!

I just came upon this thread. Actually, you may be taking too much calcium and that's why your levels havent' increased. I don't remember where I read this but apparently ingesting too much calcium at once affects the way the body breaks it down. So taking too much can be counterproductive. Do some research online as to the recommended dose- not the daily regimen but rather the amount your body can absorb at one time. Then parse your daily dose and take the maximum allowed several times throughout the day, as needed.

I wish I could say that taking too much Ca was the cause - I only actually take about 500 mg per day ( I seem to only be able to remember to take my Ca once per day instead of twice). I take a lot of magnesium though. I take the mg, calcium and D together. Along with a great multi.

Caroline, now I'm confused. Weren't you taking 5,000 and then upped it to 10,000 because of the low numbers? If you're only taking 500 now once a day, that might explain your low number! I also take my calcium with magnesium and D together (Cal-M-D), the result being that I take 250 mg calcium twice or three times a day in addition to my prenatal vitamin (though I don't know how much calcium that gives me). Taking 500 mg in one sitting may really be too much.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm taking about 500mg of calcium, not D. You can absorb 500mg at a time so that is what I take.

I had a clinic visit yesterday (why I haven't responded - I have to travel out of town) and the dietitian suggested that I take the vit d in 2 or 3 doses and keep it around 5000-6000 iu per day to see if it brings up my numbers. I am going to try... it will be very hard to remember but I will give it my best.

I have the lightbulbs for SAD not sure if it helps with Vit D. I haven't had any depression this winter...first winter with the bulbs in the family room.
