Lung function numbers went down after IVs

I recently completed two weeks worth of IVs. Sputum production went way down by the end of the course. However, my lung function has gone down from the numbers before I started IVs, which doesn't make sense and has stumped the doctor. Even a few weeks after the IVs my lung function is down.

Anyone else have this happen? Any suggestions?

1. perhaps you weren't on anti-biotics that were able to kill the bacteria and the lung infection progressed further. get another sputum test to make sure you were on teh correct antibiotics

2. are you talking about FEV1? often if FVC goes up, FEV1 will go down

I've had it happen that the combination of mucolytics and CPT while in the hospital will dislodge some gunk which would get in the way during PFTs. How active were you while on IVs? Perhaps there was something about your breathing technique that was causing the lower results.

I have had this happen. It was most likely due to inflamation from the infection and conditioning. My FEV1 returned back to where it was a few months later. After an infection it takes some time for all the excess inflamation to subside. If you are not taking any steriods maybe ask your doctor about some steriods, ie. prednisone or Advair. Also, try to step up your excercise.
