Lung Transplant Criteria

IN regards to pain meds I am thinking that they are more concerned with illegal drug use OR the MISUSE of prescription drugs.

I personally did not take pain meds before my transplant but I know many people do to assist with pain caused by the disease state they are in. I will say for those that take pain meds regularly I have noticed they have a harder time coming off them post transplant though.

Again I think it is more illegal drugs and misuse of prescribed drugs - not taking percocet (prescribed by a doc) for your arthritis or something else along those lines.

Okay, that makes me feel a bit better at least!

Faust - I have tried an anti-inflammatory diet to a degree. Honestly, it's pretty hard since I have 'impaired glucose tolerance' and I'm underweight. So I'm already not having sugar, white flour, and trying to eat healthy fats. I have a hard time with not having sugar substitutes in the anti-inflammatory diet though! What kind of natural anti-inflammatories are you talking about? I'm not sure I know what they are. I was talking ibuprofen and naprosyn quite often, but now I have a hemoptysis problem. If I take ibuprofen now, I can pretty much guarantee I'm going to have hemoptysis that night! I really miss ibuprofen!!

In response to Alisha, I think every transplant center has its own set of criteria. Many centers consider patients with cepacia to be non-eligible for transplant. Others don't transplant people who have been on a vent for more than 7 consecutive days. Most have weight, age, and other criteria as well, and yes your medical history and drug/alcohol use is typically taken into account.

My hospital posts its lung transplant criteria online (google search lung transplant Columbia Presbyterian to look). I'm sure others do too. I have to go in on May 9 to have an evaluation to see if I am eligible for listing. Fingers crossed!

Just to add to this a little. Anna was on Vicodin and then Morphine prior to being listed. She was on morphine for quite a while before transplant. When she tried to taper off she'd end up right back in the hospital, when her CF doc said, "don't try to come off, you need it". She didn't want to develop a tolerance so she could have whatever she needed post transplant. She finally was able to come off it about a month before transplant but she'd already developed a tolerance and needed way more pain meds. than they thought. It was rough first week after going to the step-down unit.

I agree, they are looking for abuse of prescription or illegal narcotics. Excessive drinking and after taking a look at the medical aspect (your history and current tests) they'll ask about your support system and check into compliance. They don't want to "waste" a set of lungs on someone that is not going to take the best care they can.
