Luteal Phase Defect

Today, I called the clinic.

We all know that I ovulated late this month, Day 21. Well, I started spotting (a pinkish discharge) for the next 2 days after OV. Then this past weekend, my CM decided to go nuts again. It was pretty green with pink highlights. I was pretty ticked off about it. I ended up wearing a "Lightday" or else there would have went my underwear again...

So I woke up this morning to find that I now had a brown discharge. My period is gonna be early!!! I'm not due until September 1st, but it is coming as early as tomorrow, plus I ovulated VERY LATE. I'M ONLY 6 DAYS PAST OVULATION AND HAVE SPOTTED EVER SINCE!!!

Sherry called me right back, and I told her everything. She told me that last Wednesday, they drew the Progesterone. It was 8.4 (which was low). They like it to be at least 10. According to my chart, the bloodwork was drawn the day after ovulation.

I told her how messed up this cycle was from beginning to now. She told me to bring in my chart on Day 3 on my new cycle. On Day 3, I officially start the bloodwork, ultrasounds and whatever else for the Clomid and IUI in mid-September. So Day 3 will probably be Thursday or Friday.

Anyway, any guesses about how messed up I am. Here is my chart!

<img src="http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p212/yenilson/August2007.png">

Just to add some humor...I guess I have a reason to be a basket case half of the time!!!

Also, it only took me 2 years to figure out how to add pictures to a single post instead of boring the entire site!!!

When I was trying to get pregnant, I realized that my luteal phase was off too. There needs to be at least 10 days between the day you ovulate and the day you start your period in order to get pregnant. I used some progesterone cream and that seemed to do the trick, I got pregnant that month.

Yeah, they are going to try Clomid this month. Hopefully, that will be enough. Honestly, I rather not get pregnant than miscarry.

The shortest luteal phase I've ever had (until now that I know of) was 10 days. I was at my father's and sister's birthday parties yesterday and SURPRISE! I even had nice undies on for the hubby. Gotta love it! I still don't have the full blown flow yet, but it's on its way. Lots of cramps now...Actually, rethinking about it...I hope it does come today. Then, I'm that much closer to starting fresh with my new cycle. This one is a LOST CAUSE anyway...

In all seriousness, though, my clinic will be sticking me pretty frequently this month to see how my levels are. I'm hoping for a miracle. Trying to conceive has been long enough for me. I hope just one thing will finally go easy in that area. It just feels like this constant struggle.

DEPRESSING THOUGHT...I think I was bleeding more than not this month. That really sucked. LOL!

I forget - how long have you been charting your cycles? Luteal phases are generally the same every month - its the first phase of the cycle that usually varies. I have a luteal phase defect right now because I'm still nursing Logan and the prolactin produced by nursing lowers progesterone. So I ovulate regularly but my luteal phase has not gone above 8 days. When I first started charting after having Logan in Jan of this year it was about 6 days. Since then I've added a few days but not nearly enough to get pregnant. Before Logan my LP was about 11 days. Short but still allowed me to get pregnant.

I did a lot of research on LP defects and first tried to extend it naturally w/ vitamin B6 but it didn't give me anything but maybe a day. So I decided I needed to see my OB and ask about prescribing progesterone to be taken after O. He prescribed me prometrium (a natural progesterone) and I'll test 14 DPO and if negative I'll stop it and try again next cycle. Clomid can be used to lengthen LP by creating a strong ovulatuion so you may be OK w/ that this cycle.

The stuff I PMed you about before is used to lengthen your LP, specifically vitex and B6. I started taking vitex this cycle and will continue taking it till I get pregnant. It can take a few months to work - it stimulates your body to produce progesterone itself. If I were you I'd start taking at least B6 this cycle. I take a balanced B 100 supplement - last month I took 100 mg a day but this month I'm taking 200 mg since the 100 mg didn't do anything. I think the vitex may be helping me - I ovulated about 1.5 days earlier than usual and vitex is also known for helping to regulate a woman's cycle. (I normally ovulate around day 21).

Oh one last thing I thought of - I believe that spotting before a period arrives can be a sign of low progesterone.

HTH and good luck
