Manual CPT vs Vest

We always did manual CPT when the boys were young. For the past 8 years we've had a therapist who comes to our house 5X a week. We use the vest on the off days.

I know the manual therapy helps the boys more than the vest by the way the cough. Plus, having a real person do the work can make it more effective for target areas.

Our doctor told us its a toss up between the effectiveness of the two but manual would be our choice.

In No Excuses blog under Warwick (inventor of the vest) it states that "Studies eventually showed that Warwick's device was at least as effective as manual chest therapy, and was used far more consistently".

I dont know where these studies are tho.

I prefer manual CPT. Its not practical at home on a regular basis, but if I have as particular area that I am having problems with (typically my upper left) then they can focus on that.

If I am having chest pain the therapist can change their positioning to cover the areas without aggrivating where I am sore.

I also like my vest, but if I am out right sick I dont think it works well. I cant tolerate the pressure high enough to get good results if I am too congested. This is where manual also helps.

BUT I will say for maintenance.....the vest works great for me.

Here is No Excuses blog if you want to check out more about Warwick & the vest:

I prefer manual CPT BY FAR, but as many have stated here, it's not always as feasible. I would HIGHLY encourage parents of younger CFers to do hand pounds as often as they can though. I do my vest because it's better than a sharp stick in the eye and because I can still look the doctors in the eye and tell them I'm 100 percent compliant. It RARELY make me cough though, it generally takes exercise or a good hand pound for that...or a huge burst of 7% <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I still beat DS every morning because we feel it's more important for him to get sleep. He sleeps thru CPT while he doesn't with the vest. So beatment in the morning -- vest after school and before bed.
