Med Side Effects...worse as you age??

You just described my exact experience w/ Levaquin! I was able to take it when I was younger, but a few years ago when I was on it I got terribly depressed (suicidal thoughts), very anxious, could not sleep, nauseous, etc. Needless to say, they took me off of it asap.

<br />I thought it was strange as well; as soon as I stopped it I was back to normal. That would be an interesting thing to study - how side effects change/differ throughout our lives...would have to be a long study, though <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I used to be able to take cipro and bactrim for a short time and then started developing allergic reactions to it. The older I get the less I am able to do antibiotic wise.

Yes people get resistant but as far as side effects go, how do they change so drastically?
Could the cipro that I took as a child be different than the cipro we take today?

How could someone not have side effects before, and now they get terrible side effects??

This is something I don't understand.

It would be surprising to me if they change the meds much as they're pretty regulated.

Don't you think it's the same effect as when you take a drug for awhile and suddenly develop an allergy? My doctor told me it's because your body becomes increasingly sensitive to it with repeated use. That makes sense to me as our bodies really aren't built to handle constant antibiotics like we take. Side effects would be the same issue probably. It's the body's way of telling you it's had enough!

I know for me the major problems with cipro/levaquin began when I took them almost constantly for months on end due to being stubborn about going the IV route. They had given me a little bit of trouble here and there before that, but things got really crazy with such constant use. Since then when I've tried it again, I've had trouble almost from the first dose. The body rebels!

I have to agree with Jana. I don't believe that they have changed the ingredients that much. I know that when I was younger I was able to take zyvox just fine and now since I am older it makes me so sick. All I want to do is just lay around. Our body chemistry's change every 10yrs. So, if you are now allergic to something that you use to not be allergic too it is because your body chemistry has changed. Not because the company has changed the ingredients.

This lasts for only 2 or 3 hours, So I just lay down till it passes.

It's a good med that works well for me.

The Odd thing is that this does not happen every time
I am on it.. I have tried to figure out what else I
may be taking , eating or drinking that may cause it.
So far, no luck..

I agree. I mean, our bodies weren't designed to take constant doses of a foreign substance. The bad reactions people experience is our bodies way of saying, "Enough!" Plus as we age, due to wear and tear, our inner workings become more fragile due to anti-biotic overuse, OTC drug abuse, and the stress and physical toll that this illness places on our bodies. Most people pop antibiotics like they are raisanetts. And after a few years of doing this, they wonder why they are experiencing all these totally "new" health concerns. Think of it this way- there are 5 basketball players guarding the hoop, what happens when those players are taken out? Why there is a clear path to the hoop. That's what happens when you take an antibiotic. They eliminate all of your good bacteria, and if the cats away the mice will play. If a portion of your body is performing badly, the rest of your body will suffer. The body in its whole is only as strong as its weakest link. If your digestive tract is suffering, or if you suffer any type of ill, you will undoubtedly experience a side effect on your whole-whether it is fatigue or a simple migraine. By ingesting an anti-biotic, it instructs your body to do something it's not accustomed to doing.
