Reece just had his changed last month. For about 2 weeks it has been giving him problems. Leaking, itchy, sometimes red & raw (right under the button) He cries & get irrated when it starts all of this. What can I do to help him?

We wipe up the leaky part with a wash cloth, & then I just leave it on there to sooth the red area. I dont leave it on there too long though. I have used zinc cream, prescribed meds on it, & I just dont know what else to do. Thanks!

Sounds like either rash from the stomach acid leaking out OR a fungal infection.
If the rash is bleeding at all, like teeny bleeding spots, swab it. In fact I would probably swab anyway. I used sudacream (dont know if you have that) and just air. Nothing heavy.

I had a fungal infection twice and it was REALLY itchy to the point of teeny bleeds. The antifungal cream sorted me out though.

If it is stomach acid, check that the bubble is full, that the tube isnt lose and failing that, have his stoma measured again.

Hope this helps! xx

When you say, "swab" it, you mean just pat it dry with a q tip? I have done that. Yes, it has bled....not much though. I have 5mls in the balloon. Thats the max it should have. It was 4 mls...but I added 1 to see if that was making it leak.

I have been having some recent leakage issues also with my daughter's MicKey. It never leaked before, but now it seems to leak on and off. I am not sure of the root cause, but I wanted to let you know the things I utilize for leaks.

Sometimes I use an ointment called Calmoseptine...it is a super barrier cream applied heavily. I bought it at the pharmacy over the counter. Another tip is a homemade one...I bought MaaLox tabs and crushed them in a pill crusher. I then used Desitin (or another zinc cream would work) and made a heavy paste. That really helped my daughter with the stomach acids that leak out. If it is indeed a fungus then these tips won't fix that. You will need an antifungal, but I think that if he is complaining of discomfort that these two may bring some relief.

I hope this helps you and feel free to e-mail me if you'd like. I have a question...how do you put the enzymes into his feeding bag? Just curious because I know everyone uses a different technique.
Best of luck,
Michelle

Thanks for the info. I dont put his enzymes in the feeding bag. I jsut mix them up in applesauce right before he goes to bed, he gets 3 creon 10 & between 1 & 2 hours before it ends 3 more creon 10. It runs for 10 hours. I heard that it wasnt a good idea to put enzymes through the button.....can get clogged up.

Oops, sorry when I say 'swab', I mean send off for analysis to see if anything nasty is growing Like you swab the back of your throat or nose to test for MRSA for example- that kind of swab!
