the mycrobacterium abscessus causes fever, lower PFTS, fatigue, and my son also lost his appeitite which he then began to loose weight, his cough was very deep and seemed to take alot out of him, he coughed so hard sometimes his face was so red when he finished, it really takes alot out of him. we have also have aspergillus and the two cant be treated with the same drug. The drugs you use for one makes the other come back quick, we learned that from experience. No I am no expert on it either, we are just mothers trying to help our children get through this as best we can. I listen to the doc and do exactly as we are told, we never miss our meds no matter what when his bug is active, or when it is not for that matter. my son is 18, he just graduated HS, we went through prom with ivs, it has been tough and now we have a break so we try and be as normal as we can. I hope we can get through the summer without ivs.

Welcome REA--

The links that were posted should give you a lot on good information especially the link Jane has posted for the mycobacterium support forum. If you have more questions, which you probably will, just ask.

I hope your Patrick gets aggressive treatment to get this nasty bug under control. I have been treated for MAI which you will read about on Cowtown's first link. Abscessus is much more difficult to control that is why aggressive treatment should be sought. Proper care is vital to keep lung damage minimal. Sometimes surgery is recommended when long term antibiotics do not get things under control.

Let us know how things are going for you and for him. Keeping you both in prayer.

we're definitely going the aggressive route to try and control it. They think they caught it early enough that it hopefully hasn't done too much damage. I appreciate the links and information, and most of all your prayers and support. He's in hospital right now with a CF flair-up, and I am 500 miles away dealing with this stuff alone. It's rough, and it is a relief to find these forums.
