Minute Clinic--guess we can't go there any more

DD has a severe sore throat and a bad cough.  I wanted a strep test done because her throat isn't getting any better and Advil doesn't seem to be helping with the pain--which usually means strep for her but it's been several years since she had strep.<div><br></div><div>I took her to minute clinic because it is just easier, however, they were part way through her appointment and when they started asking about current medications, etc. with her possible CF and history of bronchitis, etc. they can't take her as a patient any longer, crud.  It was always so easy to just run in there for the strep test.</div><div><br></div><div>Not sure if I should call the CF center or not though.  Will they want to see her now vs on the 25th for her appointment since she is sick now???</div>

Do you have a Primary Care Doctor/Pediatrician? Do you Have a CF Doctor already set up? IF this was my daughter I would absolutely call her CF doctor for a "bad cough".

It may be a blessing in disguise to not go to a "Minute Clinic". CF kids are so complicated and need their CF specialist to prescribe the appropriate treatment.

I usually call the CF clinic. When DS was a baby I took him to urgent care a few times to get a strep test or for ear infection, or for skin rashes. General practice doctors just don't know enough about CF. Plus, even though our CF clinic is 250 miles away -- they usually call back much sooner than our local pediatrician, who sometimes never do bother to return phone calls.

We still don't have an official CF diagnosis. Her appointment on the 25th is her first appointment to do a sweat test, lung function test and consult with the dr. Would you still call them with that (keeping in mind that normally a kid in the house has to have appendages falling off to see a dr <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">)?

<br> We do have a primary that she did see for other labs a week ago to rule out things like allergies, etc.

I would call her PCP for this one. Don't forget that your daughter is a regular human being who happens to have/maybe has CF. Therefore she can get all the bugs that your standard kid can get. Personally, if I have a "normal" bug, I want to be seen by the person who sees it all the time and can tell the difference between, say, strep and something else.

Going forward, if your daughter does have CF (and I hope she doesn't!), make sure her PCP is willing to defer to the advice of the CF docs and be willing to tell you when she has problems that are out of his/her comfort zone. Liza is right, many PCPs don't know enough about CF. You need someone who is looking out for your daughter and not their ego.

I think the PCP is the way to go here, BUT you really need to consider what you will do if they will put her on antibiotics. CF kids usually need a much longer course of abx to kill the bugs that get them. I'm most concerned about the bad cough....if it is from a CF exacerbation and she gets 10 days of abx X, it may just knock the numbers low enough to stop her from coughing but they will still be there and now get the chance to grow resistant to that antibiotic and come back later with a vengeance.
