Miscarriage

Thank you all for your replies. I called the nurse and all she said was "at 6 weeks there's nothing we can do." I didn't particularly like her answer, but all of your responses have made me feel better It's so hard not to stress. I spent last weekend in the hospital to get my blood sugars leveled out. They were fine, but since I am on the insulin pump they wanted to get new basal levels for the pregnancy. It was the first time I had ever been in the hospital for anything other than CF! While I was there they did an ultrasound and I saw the yolk sac. I'm hoping that my appointment next Friday will show us a heartbeat!

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to tell you that spotting for the most part (at least in my case and a few of my friends) is normal. I spotted with both of mine, and almost my entire pregnancy with my second. They never knew why, but, yeah, it's VERY scary. I even cramped during the second pregnancy and truly thought I was miscarrying. Take a deep breath...I know it's scary, but it does sound like implantation.

My parents went with me to the ER yesterday because I couldn't stand to wait until my appointment on Friday to find out what was going on. They checked my hormone levels and did an ultrasound.

Hormone level was at 59,000 which is right about what it should be for 6 weeks (but 10 days ago it was 29,000). Ultrasound showed no heartbeat......

So....the doctor said he was 95% sure that I was in the process of having a miscarriage The other 5% could just be that the heartbeat hasn't started yet. When I had an ultrasound 10 days ago it just showed a yolk sac. The one yesterday showed an actual fetus.

They asked if I wanted to do a D&C while I was there, but after calling my husband and talking it over with my parents, I've decided to wait until Friday to see if there is a heartbeat yet. If there is not, which there should definitely be one by Friday, then I will do it.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences, they kept my spirits up for the past week. I have already accepted that this will probably happen, but a little of me is still holding on to that 5%.

Sounds like you're handling it really well. Accepting if it happens but hopeful for that 5% chance of a little life within you.

I too wouldn't have gone through with a procedure just yet. It is still pretty early and finding a heartbeat on a bean that size can be difficult. Especially I would guess by an ER tech that might not be that experienced with doing u/s. I remember early on at an ultrasound the tech had found the baby and then a doctor wanted to take a look and she couldn't even find the baby.

Is a D&C even recommended for a pregnancy that early? I thought you could pass the baby without the necessity of a procedure. I really have no idea though - haven't researched it.

I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.

Lindsey,

I know you are getting lots of advice right now. Can I tell you about a similar story? I have a friend (no cf) and she had a very similar beginning to her pg. She even went to the ER around 6 weeks and was told the same thing! In my opinion, ultrasounds done that early should be done by a fertility specialist. They have better equipment and better training. I am going to believe that the ER doctor was using lower graded equipment (even my OB's equipment was worse than the RE and the Peri). A lot of times you can't see the hb till about 7 weeks anyway. Hang in there. It sounds like you are doing everything you can. I know it's all a waiting game. I wish I had better advice. All I can do is send you a virtual {{{{HUG}}}} Oh, and my friend that had spotting and the ER u/s at 6 weeks, she has a happy healthy 18 month old from that pregnancy. The ER basically told her to prepare for a miscarriage too. And she wasn't having one. So all I'm saying is, it's a common ER mistake. I've heard the same story more than once. I'm praying you do have a heartbeat in there on Friday. Hang in there!

I had the tilted pelvis early on - that's why it was difficult for the doctor to find the heartbeat. Only the highly experienced tech was able to measure it. I was 8 weeks at that point.
