Morning yuckiness and how to "fix" it

I'm not sure if I posted this here before, but I know that a lot of us wake up with "morning yuckiness".

Mine is a combination of a layer of mucous in the chest that has to be coughed up, my sinuses which need to be rinsed, pancreatitis pain that needs medication and a heating pad, achy joints and back due to edema problems (hormone imbalance), upset tummy that needs some bathroom time, fatigue from coughing/being in pain/not sleeping well, and taking the multitude of daily medications.

My wish is to wake up refreshed, energetic, clear-breathing, and not in pain. I'm not sure if I can fix the second two, but the first two have got to have some solutions.

No matter how much I sleep, I wake up exhausted. I have a new bed (thought that was the reason I was achy, but it's not). I sleep 8-11 hours a night (I have tried everything in between to make sure it's not too little or too much). I wake up with no energy. I wake up feeling crappy.

It takes a few hours every day to: clear out my sinuses and chest, get my tummy pain under control (I can't eat until the pain is dulled), finish my bathroom time (sometimes it takes 2-3 visits to "complete" my mission", and feel ready to do anything else. Of course, depending on what condition is flaring up, I may not have the energy or ability to go anywhere or get a lot done at home.

This is what most discourages me. I'd love to wake up, shower, eat breakfast, and go. I don't work anymore, but I do (did) have hobbies and friends, and I don't really do much with that anymore. Right now, I am plagued by allergies (despite 4 medications), pancreatitis pain, and joint and muscle aches.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to wake up refreshed and feeling good? I am taking vitamin supplements (my D is low), have started to exercise again, and try to have a regular sleep schedule. If anyone has been through this and have "fixed" it or lessened the yuckiness of the morning, please let me know. It's the thing that makes me saddest about my CF.

Thanks in advance.

Morning yuckiness and how to

Hi there,

I'm so sorry to hear that you have been waking up feeling yuck despite all your pro activeness on things.
I feel like this in the mornings too, but I also think it has a bit to do with how the weather is that morning too, as i have a bad asmatha component as well.

So I don't know if this will be helpful to you and you may have tried this already...?

But I find what helps me in the mornings (especially with the lungs) is having my salbutamol & ibrapropium together in my neb/eflow. Then after I've finished, I mix up some oral electrolyte powder sachet in 200mls of distilled water.
You can buy these from your pharmacy at a very low cost. There are usually about 10 sachets in a box.

Theses sachets ARE NOT your typical electrolyte drinks like 'powerade or gatorade. No they have more electrolytes in them and each sachet has a less sugar content in them than powerade or gatorade.
I find them really good for easing cramps, muscle aches, easing lung pains at times and just feeling loads more hydrated. You can take up to 16 sachets per day, it's also very good for the bowels.

below I've given you a list of what is in these sachets.
Each sachet of electrolyte oral power contains:

Sodium chloride BP 0.47g,
Potassium chloride BP 0.30g,
Sodium acid citrate BP 0.53g
Glucose BP 3.56g.

Also each sachet contains saccharin sodium.

Anyway, that's all I got. Hope this helps.

For the lung "yuckiness" I find that going on a 40 + minute run the night before makes a world of difference. I cough all the crap up and I wake up the next morning feeling not 100 % clear, but much closer to it than when I don't exercise. The way I think about it is, my body can't clear this toxic mucus out automatically, so it's up to me to manually get it out. I feel that anything that helps me sweat helps "detox" the phlegm and get it out of my pores. It's also an amazing feeling that I am taking control of my CF and the added benefits include looking great in my jeans and being able to get up stairs without being winded while my friends (no CF) huff and puff!

I find the electrolytes very interesting.

A few questions - is the "saccharin sodium" fake sugar? I can't ingest fake sugar, sugar alcohols, sugar substitutes. Also, I am on medication for extreme edema, (the drug retains potassium), so I have to check to see if any of the ingredients you have listed would effect the medication.

Finding a solution to my depleted energy, feeling like going right back to sleep, and the strong achiness would be wonderful. It's half my morning battle.

I had my right ACL (it's a long ligament in your leg) reconstructed due to a ski accident many years ago. Unfortunately, despite 9 months of rehab, I can't do much with it - run, dance, jump, squat. (Which sucks because I used to dance in musical theater productions). Otherwise, I do pretty well in clearing secretions in the morning. It just takes a couple of hours.

I started doing Pilates again, but I am running into problems with retaining water after each session - I'm talking 5-7 pounds overnight, which is pretty painful.

As of recently, I believe that my morning secretions are due to a few things: my outdoor allergies are many times worse this year - both in my sinuses and lungs, the fact that I had sinus surgery and a lot of the mucous from infection or allergies can drain and settle while I sleep, and the gradual progression of my CF. Never before the past year, have I had to do airway clearance several times a day. Usually it was a few times a week. Now it's "a constant" in my life.

Thank you both for your ideas.

Just did some research on 'saccharin' and I think is it a form of artificial sugar. Didn't realise that myself! Now I know! Lol

I guess if you can't take the electrolyte sachets...you could drink a few glasses of water per morning and see if that makes a difference...?

Sorry I can't be more helpful on this.

Hope whatever you try works for you though.
