Seems like a lot of people come here to get advice or get motivated. Let’s make this posting do both. I want all of you to come post what you like to do to keep healthy. It can be anything from dancing, running, or whatever you do, there is nothing too small. Talk about why you do it and how it makes you feel when you’re done. This isn't just for the people with CF it is for everyone. I thought we could use this post to give others ideas on what works for the rest of us. It is notjust about what we do but more about what we have found that is fun to do and makes us feel healthier. So come on and share what you enjoy to do for exercise it might just help someone else.I will start, I truly enjoy sports. You name it and I would probably play it. I have a very competitive family and we enjoy the aspect of any competition, win or lose it is just fun. =) I am known for being the runner in my family and have run a few marathonsas well as some othergoofy races (I will leave it at that). I found being active is justapart of who I am and makes me feel good.I truly believe that growing up in that kind of environment helped me with my CF. I give credit to exercise for my current health and if asked by anyone I would suggest that they find some sort of exercise they enjoy doing and make it apart of their own life. If you enjoy it you are more likely to stick with it and that is the most important part.So go find something that makes you feel good and come back here and let everyone know.

Great idea!

I start every week with a workout goal - I want to do 120 minutes of cardio and lift weights at least twice. I am especially strict about the cardio because I think this has had the biggest impact on my health. On some days I do 20 minutes of cardio, on others I do 30 minutes. Sometimes it's 18 and then 32 It just all had to add up to 120 minutes. I give myself lots of options - we have a stationary bike at home, and I do a lot of jogging. I also belong to a gym so I have all of the cardio equipment there, plus classes if I want to take them. And I have some workout videos.

I start my "week" on Monday so that, if I don't get enough done during the week, I have the weekend to catch up. But my goal is usually to take one day off on the weekend. I like to try to get some in on Monday and Tuesday so i can start my week off right.

I have a heart rate monitor that lets me know when to ease up and when to push myself harder.

Sometimes I will read while riding my stationary bike. And I love my ipod for almost all of my workouts!

I have a couple activities that I love--rock climbing and dancing. Dancing involves controlling your body--something you yearn to do with a chronic disease. Rock climbing involves containing danger and overcoming an obstacle...'nuf said.
Unfortunately, since I was hospitalized last December, I haven't been able to do either at the frequency or difficulty that I was accustomed to. I start to build up again but I'm plagued by fevers, pleurisy and basically a low-grade exacerbation that ramps up whenever I push real hard. This frustrates me, to put it mildly, though I'll still say the joy I get out of the activities outweighs my pity-party :) about losing strength and endurance. Also, in these social athletics, I've at least learned that almost everyone has an injury or an issue that they deal with. It may not be life-threatening, but a messed up shoulder or the the simple progression of age for an athlete means accepting a decline in performance.

Bigstar....have you tried Jillian Michaels' DVD workouts? I haven't done them in quite a while (I had a baby in December and just haven't made time to do them), but they are excellent. I really like Jillian Michaels'Yoga Meltdown and her 30 Day Shred DVDs - they are about $9.99 each. All you really need is a yoga mat or towel and some hand weights (3-5lbs). I really like the fact that the workouts on 30 Day Shred are only 20 minutes long, and Jillian Michaels switches it up so you're only doing each activity for a couple of minutes....I figure I can do anything if I know it will end in a minute or two! The Yoga Meltdown is not traditional yoga where you chant and sit...it makes you sweat and really tones your body since you're usign your own body weight! BothDVDs arenice for CFersbecause you can hit pause ifyou need a break andJillianhas someone doing themodified versions of the exercises at the same time she's doing the regular version, so you can follow that person if you need to (or the advanced person if you're up for it). Just thought I'd share!

Last time I went to see the Dr. she told me that I would never be able to run again. While that might have been a tiny bit dissapointing to some people it was pretty good motivation for me. I have spent my life, for better or worse, doing things that people told me I couldn't do. I have been walking for 1/2 hour on most days and lately have started running for about 150 yards or so at a time.

I just want to say great job scarecrow (Dale). It is that kind of an attitude that we all need to keep us going. You are an inspiration and I hope you keep up the great work. Also wanted to let you know that the way you are getting back into running is the correct way. Slowly add distance as you go and you will soon find you are running more then you are walking. =)

This is what I've achieved in a few months. I have "low" lung function! Push yourself even when it's hard is all I can say.
