MRSA & PA

Hi Jessica. Sorry to hear about the PA and MRSA. I think it can be common that they go that long without a positive culture, especially when they are as young as Madison. The little ones don't know how to cough up the mucus for a good culture. So you are only really getting what is showing up in the throat.

I expressed my concern regarding this issue with my girls CF dr. and he said that is why they went to culturing at every clinic appt rather than years ago when they only did the cultures once a year. He said that doing them more often will give you a better chance at finding the bacteria, even if it is only a throat culture.

My daughter, Hannah, cultured PA in August 06 and then Sept 06, then August 07...so far in 08 she has been clear<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Each time she has done Tobi for 4 weeks and Cipro for 2 weeks.

Both of my girls have MRSA, and it is sensitive to Bactrim, so that is what they are normally on during flare ups. Our dr. doesn't treat the MRSA unless they are having symptoms.

My son has cultured psuedomonas 4 times over the past 5 years. Each time it was at his office visit in early fall.
I really don't think in his case it ever goes away. We do continually treat every other month with tobi.

Thank you everyone that responded. Madison's doctor does not want to treat the MRSA. Which surprises me but she is the doctor.

At the CF conference, there was alot of talk about MRSA and CF. There is no conclusive evidence about how to treat it best. Our son Aidan, aged 4, cultured MRSA for the first time a few weeks ago. My center was not really going to treat it too differently than his usual Staph flare ups. However, I have heard from more doctors that any bacteria sitting in the lungs should be treated and does cause damage.

So I asked to treat it aggressively. Aidan did 3 weeks of Bactrim, 1 week of Rifampin, Bactroban up the nose, Phisohex baths and 2 weeks of IV Vancomycin. His culture after just the Bactrim and Rifampin was negative for MRSA! Vanco ends on Thursday so we will culture again. It may still be there, it may come back but at least I know we tried. Aidan has horrific sinuses and I knew MRSA would just make it worse.
