MRSA

My mother has been dxed with pneumonia and the sputum culture just came back yesterday, positive for mrsa. Obviously I'm going to be calling the dr office bright and early monday morning. We suspect she's had it for a couple months now because she's been getting progressively worse the past couple months. So this probably means either I got it from her, probably going to get it from her, or gave it to her. One way or another I've been exposed to airbourne mrsa. I think gone are the days of culturing only a simple pseudomonus. To compound the issue, I've been being my typical self and not being even close to 100% compliant. Up until now I've not paid much attention to the mrsa threads and know nothing about it. What am I in for?

It's my understanding that cfer's usually dont contract mrsa unless they're sick and run down...then they're more suseptible to it.

I dont know if that is correct, but I believe that mrsa isnt that easy to catch. On the other hand I wouldnt be placing my children in a position where they would come in contact with it (just in case).

Hopefully what I have said here proves true in your case So maybe you havent contracted it after all, hope that is the case...I dont actually have any experience with mrsa, maybe wait until you know for sure you have it?

Hi Robert,
I'm by no means an expert as I just began culturing mrsa this past year. What i do know it means is another iv antibiotic during tune-ups. And I've got another oral antibiotic, Bactrim. What it doesn't seem to mean is giving up. I've seen some folks on here that have cultured it for more than a dozen years. It can clear up for a while and then come back. But FIRST: find out if you really have it and wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands! Now's the time to get serious about compliance, my man.

I'll tell you the truth. I was as non-compliant as they come, and then I got MRSA from being in college --or we just assumed that's where I picked it up. Since contracting MRSA I have had more flare ups, and have been hospitalized more frequently, and felt crappier inbetween tune-ups. Since I started culturing MRSA I really buckled down and have become pretty compliant. I won't say 100% because we all have 'those days' but I'd say a good 90% compliant. Truth be told, I haven't been as healthy since I started culturing MRSA. =\ It stinks but you gotta do what you gotta do and now I'm much more aware of my CF and what it takes to stay healthy. It was a harsh wake-up call for me that this is a progressive disease, but like MiddleAgedLady said it definitely doesn't mean giving up!!
