MRSA

Just received results from culture and found MRSA for 2nd time. How serious......very concerned about my 8 yr. old daughter. I know that this is now found in 20% of CF patients and the number is growing. There is a research study currently in progress due to the growing number (I have been told). Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. She is currently taking Bactrim.

Meth Resistance Staph Aureus, I had it back in the late 90s. It really did not affect any interaction in public except I had to limit myself on how much kissing I did, and when I was in the hospital, I was in precautionary isolation, meaning I could not leave my room, was required to have a private room, and visitors had to wear masks and gowns. I was cleared by culture tests done by Infectious Disease in the date on my signature, and have only grown Meth Susceptible Staph Aureus (MSSA) since, which is mild and has no real precautions.

I know a good amount about MRSA. My son,one of my non CF children, had a MRSA outbreak about 5 years ago. MRSA is a bacteria that almost everyone carries on their body.MRSA is found in instiutions, hospitals, daycares, etc Once the bacteria becomes active, it is easy to get more breakouts. Due to your child having CF, and probably in hospitals a good amount, her suspetability is high. It is nerve racking during tratment. just dont believe everything you read on the internet, you can become mis informed. and you already have enough to worry about. My son had a puss pocket that looked like an infected spiderbite. the key is draining all of the bacteria. if it is internal, it has taken a few people several rounds of antibiotics to clear up this type of bacm

MRSA is fairly common in everyone. it may be a little harder to fight off with a weakened immune system. I hope this helps a little. My daughter also cultured mrsa and our doctor too told us about the study that is supposed to be completed I believe this month (June). Meanwhile we followed a bactrim/mupirocin/Hibiclens protocol for 3 weeks which I believe is what they are trying out in this study for pediatric patients. It didn't succeed eradicating our mrsa but it diminished it in numbers.

For now the doctor is "observing" it I.e. no meds<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My daughter is almost 10. She cultured MRSA for the first time when she was 2, and has cultured it every since. They say it supposed to be benign on functions. I don't agree with this. For the most part she does fine, however every now and then I think it get out of control and we need to go in and do a tune-up. Don't let it discourage you. Kendall's FEV1 are 125% and small airways are 100%. Right now is is sick and we think it is the MRSA and her FEV1 are down 10% and her small airways are down 15%. Her doctor put her on oral Zyvox. You know your child best and follow your gut. You can maintain the MRSA. We have been doing it for almost 8 years and Kendall is doing well.
