Mucous Question

I was looking for a little input about Maggie. She's been doing ok; sick alot with regular kid stuff this spring but nothing crazy. She did culture H.flu recently; new for her. She cultures MRSA off/on and staph but not for a long time. Her culture in June came back clear; basically normal flora... She has started up with this kind of mucousy thing around the 4th of july. Sounded like mucous in the throat; maybe chest, hard to tell she gets a wheezy sound in her throat and coughs and clears it. When i had listened in her lungs(have a stethescope at home) she sounded tight like their was stuff in her chest. Her CF doc increased her Bactrim which she is always on to double it for 10 days; increase CPT and albuterol, basically beat it out of her(this was all over the phone). She did clear the stuff out; and seemed back to her usual self(never really seemed that bad anyway). Course now she's been off the double dose Bactrim for 4-5 days, just taking it once a day and she can make that wheeze in her throat again and take deep breathes cough and it sound like mucous coming up. So, not sure what to do. SHe never had a temp, never seemed really sick, still went to camp went to visit family. I don't know, if this is normal..Should I check in with her Cf doc or try increasing nebs and VEST again...or does she need a culture again or what. She did seem a little tired today, a little pale but she had a VERY busy day that day. Looking for input; thinking she may need another culture...or back on the Bactrim double dose for a longer time...

I don't know the answer, but I'll be watching the thread. Alyssa has been in a similar situation with the mucous that could be in her throat or her lungs -- I'm not sure. She's been on Augmentin for 7 days and her cough is only getting worse. When I called yesterday they told me they wouldn't expect her to stop coughing after only 6 days on augmentin. So I'm watching and waiting and unsure what it all means.

I hope someone has some insight for you.

I guess I'd probably increase nebs and vest AND ask for a culture. You know her best and if something doesn't seem right, it might be a good idea to take her in. In the past when ds has ended up with a junky cough, it's rare that he runs a fever right away. But his respiratory rate increases.

If it were my home, the response would be to work on PH balance and probably increase intake of sea salt. One study indicated that people with CF don't really produce too much mucus, they produce too little. My experience fits with that: When my sinuses are too dry, I cough up more stuff. Given that important role mucus plays in keeping out invaders, it makes sense to me that too little mucus would be a cause of a compromised immune system. Salt is an important component of mucus so getting enough fluids and sea salt is nutritional support for healthy mucus production. And when I am too acid, I have more lung inflammation and develop a cough as well, something I don't normally have.

Good luck with this.
