Also, I didn't think you were supposed to give babies water to drink. I remember doing it once when it was really warm out when DS was a baby and he hurled all over the place.

Having trouble finishing his bottles makes me think of two things... he is filling up on water, and he has nasal congestion that is making it hard for him to drink and breathe at the same time.

Sinus congestion leading to heavy postnasal drip can make a kid sound like Darth Vader and really rattly even if their chest is mostly clear (since they are breathing through it- but it's really more up in their throat, not the lungs)...now, with CF in the picture you can never jump to the conclusion that the lungs are clear, but it does sound like nasal congestion could be a big issue worth trying to fix. Saline spray or drops followed by the bulb syringe to suck everything out before it can run down his throat and make him vomit might work better- and don't have him laying flat on his back when you do it (oh it's unbelievable what will come out of that nose!) This can give a lot of relief, even though they will often scream like you are torturing them through the process... Since this has been going on for a long time, worsening, it sounds like the possibility is there for a sinus infection that should be treated.

Back to the water for a minute- did his doctor recommend it? I'd ask about it. If he wants the baby to get extra clear fluids, some Pedialyte might be better, and maybe try it after he's had his formula, so he doesn't fill up on it first.

I hope he's feeling better soon! It's so hard when they are sick

Thanks for all of your replies. I was under the same impression about the water in babies, but the CF doctor told us to do it, and we have tried numerous times and he will not take it. We tried Pedialyte for the first time this weekend and he took it and then took a small amount of milk after he had it. I just tried again this morning and he spat it everywhere and then would not take the milk. But will try again next feed.

Now in terms of CPT - yes we are doing 3 -4 times per day after we have done the abuterol treatment. I have not tried the bulb after the saline as nothing seems to be in his nose - it is all in his throat. Should I still try to do the bulb? I have left a message with the CF clinic this morning, hopefully they will call back today - they are rather slow in returning messages. It is so hard when they keep saying he is clear - so thanks for all your advice. x

I would give the bulb a try after shooting some saline spray up there. They make it in aerosol form, which might be both easier to do and penetrate farther up into the nasal cavity than the drops... once it's been up there for several seconds you can see what you can get out with the bulb.

Since they keep insisting his lungs are clear- I'd have them check his nose and throat; they can often see if there is postnasal drip coming down. At this point with how long this has continued and how it's worsening, if they see evidence of that I would ask about treating for a sinus infection given how much this is impacting him. I don't think it's something that should just be written off as a 'normal thing' or be expected to grow out of at all.

I hope his dr calls back today- it's so hard waiting to hear back, especially when you know something is wrong and no one else seems to recognize it!
