My 7 year can't (or won't) swallow his enzymes.

My son who just turned 7, 2 days ago said he could not swallow his enzymes. My wife is a nurse and sees no obvious physical reasons in his throat. The doc at uofm only suggestion so far was to mix his enzymes with applesauce which we did but he even has spit those out. this morning before school he did take his enzyme "beads" with some yougurt. We used to have to do that many years ago, but he has been swollowing his enzymes for a few years now with never a problem.
If anyone has had this experience, please email me davidcollins@wowway.com

I have very limited experience with the cf world, but my dd has other medical conditions and for the last 5yrs on my other medical forum 'how do I get my child to swallow pills and/or sprinkles' comes up all the time. We parents have had to get really, really creative in this endeavor!

Some top hits when parents get desperate: coolwhip on a spoon, chocolate syrup, jelly, ice cream, jello, mashed potatoes. He might not think of some of these things... The 'sprinkles' we talk about can't be chewed either so anything that helps them 'slide down' is important.

Did he ever bite a couple by accident and wind up having mouth pain as a result? (They told us this would happen if Emily did.) Maybe he is ready to learn to swallow the pills whole, whether you continue to use a bite of food or try liquid. Emily has been swallowing pills whole in a bite of applesauce since she was 3 so fortunately, adding enzymes to the pile of meds she takes daily has not added too much trouble.

If anyone happens to be interested, the favorite method we talk about on my other forum for helping kids learn to swallow pills is w/ using M & M's. Start with mini's and once they get those down without gagging, try regular size; if they have any trouble along the way all they have to do is eat them- no choking or 'bad taste' to worry about; if needed find another candy more the shape of the med your child takes as another step.

hi my name is autumn and i am 12 years old and when i was younger, i used to HATE to take enzymes but then i learned a way to take them better by opening up the capsels (if thats what kind you have) and sprinkling them into a spoon full of apple sauce. that way, either your son will like it and can take them better, or you can just sneak them into his apple sause if he likes that! lol
