My Child Resemble a Salt Lick

We have to give M Gatorade. He won't drink plain water and he won't eat salt. Seriously, he will eat salty junkfood but not salt. So, we keep him supplied with Gatorade. The nutritionalist at our CF center wanted me to wean him off the Gatorade but once I realized I cannot get him to consume salt for anything, I decided this was the lesser of the evils. And, its a huge improvement from where he was. Fostermom gave him nothing but coke to drink, she thought that was the way to keep him hydrated and full of salt. Of course, the caffiene he was consuming DEhydrated him and the acid leached minerals from his body...but hey why not give him nothing but coke at 4 and 5.

Yeah, I'll take the Gatorade over that!

We're going to see a Major League baseball game tomorrow. We're packing several bottles of Gatorade to make sure he stays hydrated *and* we'll be buying him lots of salty snacks.

We do Gatorade, too. Now they have a new one called G2 that's a little lower in sugar if you're watching that.

My daughter takes the salt shaker, licks her hand and pours it on.

When she was an infant, our doctor prescribed salt for her in liquid form. We had to go to a compounding pharmacist and they mixed it for her. My doc felt this was safer than us trying to measure a specific amount of table salt. We did that for her first year. Now we just give her table salt. -Elise

One thing you should be aware of is how uncomfortable CF sweat is. When we sweat, the salt crystals often dig into our skin and give the impression that we're being cut.

My suggestion for dealing with this problem is to bring along a bottle of water wherever you go. if your child is exercising, sweatbands are an excellent idea. You can wet them with water before your child starts to exercise.
