They should be able to tell you more than it 'may' be covered I would search for more details from someone. Ask if they have a 'rapid resolution' expert or a family planning expert or a supervisor.

Also whether its covered may be dependent on what the RE puts down as the 'diagnosis' or reason for it being needed. So be careful there and explain to him/her fully the situation. For instance if you went in and they decided that you ovulate irregularly they may just put that code down but you want to make sure that if they have it they put down whatever has to deal with avoiding a cf pregnancy.

Oh and one more thing I am sure you have but make sure you READ what IVF/PGD is and are comfortable with it. Its one thing to have an idea and another to actually know the details and carry through with it. Our clinic actually explains what things like selective reduction are where many clinics just say 'we can reduce' or something along those lines and then later when people go to do it or find out what it involves they are not prepared.

Hi Nicole,

The insurance rep told me that the doctor's office should request a written authorization before beginning treatment. They'd need medical history info and my pregnancy history speaks for itself. I'd want a copy of that letter for my files before doing anything.

IVF is risky but I feel it is necessary for my psychological well being. I am also running out of time, I am getting to be too old. <img src=""> Selective reduction isn't something I could do, I've read up on that. I'd just restrict it to 2 embryos so the maximum outcome is twins. There is a procedure where the embryo is allowed to mature more and then a single embryo transfer is performed. I am interested in that more than risking twins but I'm 38 and a half so I don't know what would be done.

Are you doing IVF?

Bonnie-we did IVF to get DD and we did a FET (Frozen embryo transfer) last month with no success, we still have 7 frozen embryos and will do another FET next month. I highly recommend the book "the couples guide to IVF" it is very informative. Let me know if you have any questions. I am glad you have the insurance thing all figure out.

I am curious that you said you will not selectively reduce, you do know that is what PGD is right? Only its before they are in that they are 'selected out'? I am not into judging others choices I just wanted to make sure you knew what the PGD part meant.

We do two embryos, with frozen odds of success are somewhat lower so they would do 3 but I dont want to risk it. With your age it depends on the embryo quality and how 'old' they are when they put them back they may recommend 3. Anyway bridges to cross as you get there.

Best of luck!

I'm sorry to hear the transfer didn't work. Thanks for the book recommendation. I thought you meant selective reduction (fetal reduction surgery/abortion) for multiples. No, I have no issue with destroying all of the CF or poor quality embryos. It does make me sad but it is more acceptable to me than the alternatives.
