We got a letter in the mail today. Our son throat culture on 10/13 grew Haemophilus influeza and Staph aureus.

All it says is the The treatment your child is recieving should be satisfactory for this culture result. (He had a small cough we have been treating with oral antibotics "Cephalexin" since clinic.

Here are some of my crazy questions..

1. Anyone have any info about the bugs he cultured?

2. Does oral antibotic usually knock this out?

3. Does this mean now when I'm asked what bugs he has I need to say Staph?

4. Will this change the day he is treated at the clinic..We have been going to Baby CF Clinic Day....But, I know that changes after they culture things.

Thanks,

Sarah

My daughter has cultured both of those. Our doctor doesn't treat either of them unless symptoms come up. Our doctor didn't consider my daughter as normally culturing staph (or what he says "chronically culturing staph") until we saw a pattern of it returning within one culture of abx. They can also usually know the numbers that they culture of the staph, and as long as the numbers are low it is of little concern.

I'm sorry you got this news, I remember it being very difficult for us too -- but I have been assured that staph and h. flu are very normal CF bugs and usually not the ones you need to be stressing over.

When my son cultured Haemophilus Influenza we were told it wasn't considered a CF bug. They said it was a fairly common bug that all kids can get that causes ear and sinus infections. I'm not thrilled that they sent you a letter in the mail rather than calling you to let you know that he cultured something though.

Similar to Buckeye's post ds also cultured H. Flu, had some sinus issues early on. When he started zithromax at age 2 1/2, the doctor mentioned the a bonus would most likely be that it would be erradicated, which it was.

DS hasn't cultured staph, but then he's been on Keflex since he was a couple weeks old.
