Hi my son is 6 and started school for the first time in August he is doing quite well health wize only one upper respiratory infection and responded well with antibiotics.I was very nervous about him attending school I actually wanted to home school him. But,after talking to doctor who felt he was ready teachers principals nurses secretary and most of all my son I went ahead and enrolled him. When he started school I not only spoke to all of these people but gave them literature on CF and a letter to each of them telling them about Nick his history struggles and just him.I want so badly for him to be healthy first and foremost. We also went over his needs snacks meds handwashing toileting whatever I could think of I also gave them my phone numbers and email to try to keep open communication.
Here is my problem I got a call from a truancy officer yes he is in kindergarden!!I guess the policy at school although I was not made aware of this is after 5 days a quarter of absenses he must have doctors excuse. He has missed 9 days he was home 4 in a row due to his infection put on antibiotic ect. seen by doctor. When this officer called I explained situation and contacted his specialist and they gave them doctors excuses for all the dates he missed. I keep Nick home if he is symptomatic or obviously sick also if he is up all night coughing ect.he is in class 4 hours a day. Also I am a nurse and hoping by keeping on top of things I try to mantain his health best I can as I think most of us parents do.
When I called the school I was distraught I told them I thought I had done everything I could to educate them on Cf and Nick. They told me they understand but it was too much.I became angry at this point who are they to say its too much!!They said well I dont know cause I dont have a child with that!!!My gosh they dont even know what it is called!!!
I have no problems with this officer now once all was clarified and we are getting a IEP if any of you are familiar with this it helps to establish his needs.
I have requested meeting with principal because I am still very upset am I wrong???
Also my son is struggling in school with school work I know its a confidence thing so I am going to try to have him talk with someone and help him as much as I can.Am I wrong to expect more from his school ???Any suggestion sorry to ramble just dont know what else I could have done??

I'd be extremely upset as well. The Public School needs to meet the needs of all children - hopefully with the IEP things will get better.

We haven't gone through this yet so I have no words of wisdom for you. I'm just trying to learn as much as I need to before Lili heads off to Kindergarten next year.

GGGRRRRR, getting schools to pay attention to your needs is infuriating! What you need for your son is a 504 accomodation plan. An IEP is for learning issues. AN accomodation issues is put in place so the school HAS TO provide any accomodations your child needs for his health during school hours.

My kids have several including waived tardies to school. You can get anything your doctor will support. Schools do require a doctors note to return to school after an illness, but sometimes you can have a standing one for a chronic illness. If you want I can email a copy of our 504. I'm sure there are lots of parents her who can share theirs too.

Definitely get the 504 plan! We live in a small town, and the school is wonderful with my daughter, especially the nurse...our problem is that there's another child in the school with CF, so the school has to be on their toes to keep the two of them separate - and I had to make sure that it's all laid out in the 504 plan. It really doesn't matter if they don't know what it's like to have a child with CF - all they need to know is that your child does have cf, and how are they gonna do all they can to make sure your child is taken care of!!! the lack of concern from them would really bug me.
