My son is 20 weeks old, under weight and i don't know what to do in my situation. Please HELP

Hi everyone,

I'm a mother of a 20 week old baby, who was born 20 days before the given due date. We found out our son having CF when he was almost a month old with the newborn screening. We then did the sweat test which confirmed it.

I've been breastfeeding him since birth. Two months ago he was underweight and this month he is more underweight than last. The staffing in the CF office (including the dietitian) say its not enough and its extremely important for him to start gaining weight. I have read that breast fed babies don't gain as much weight as formula fed babies. The staff recommended I start fortifying my breast milk with formula. As much as I didn't and don't like the idea of formula, I went ahead and did it anyway. My son had a bad reaction to it and I immediately stopped. I started giving him organic whole grain rice cereal instead with my breast milk which seems to agree, but it's not giving him enough of the nutrients he needs. Additionally, he is not eating as often since he is fuller and satisfied from the cereal.

The dietitian has recommended a hypoallergenic formula as well as starting him on solid foods. Is it too early? I've been really uncomfortable with the way things in this office have been handled from the daily dosage of salt to the antacid to the aerosol. I really love homeopathic remedies and wish I could apply it to the things he is taking (any suggestions?) We tried the Creon5 enzymes which did not agree with him, but found the Pancreacarb MS4 works as long as we keep increasing his dosage. Same thing happened with the Prevacid to Zantac. We also tried a multivitamin, (I can't remember the name of it right now,) but it didn't work for him so we switched to SourceCF.

I'm now able to give him 1/4 tsp of salt a day. Once we got all of this under control, plus his body got used to it, this week my son developed a mucous cough (the CF doctor's office say it's upper respiratory so is it really necessary if his lungs are clear to give him aerosol?)

My son takes:
2 capsules of Pancreacarb MS4 with every feeding
1 ml of Zantac 3x a day
1/4 tsp of salt a day
.25 ml 4x a day of multivitamin

<img src=""> I really need advice; I feel stuck. Do you know of anyone that has been through a similar experience? Should I start him on formula (Pregestimil) and/or solid foods (avocado, sweet potato, banana)?

My nutritional recommendations are:
add 1/4 tsp of Pregestimil powder per ounce of extracted breast milk
start giving enzymes in apple sauce
start spoon feedings 1-2 x per day
eventually add 1/4 tsp oil (olive or canola) per ounce of baby food (once tolerant on its own for 3-4 days)

Thank-you in advance for any and all recommendations you may give me, and/or any suggestions to ease my son's ailments.

My son is 20 weeks old, under weight and i don't know what to do in my situation. Please HELP

Hi Lissy,

I have a son born on September 23 also with CF. I still breastfeed him and have started him on rice cereal 2x a day once he hit 6 months. I have done some research and this is what I might recommend you looking into...

From 3 weeks on when my son was diagnosed we began giving him 1 tiny baby spoon full of BABY apple sauce (the least allergenic food)to get his enzymes down. I also give him Himalain Sea Salt as it is the purest form of salt. You can purchase it at a natural food store.

As far as the Zantac, there is a lot of ways to adjust the natural PH level in the body. Apple Cidar Vinegar is a huge natural alternative to Zantac or any antacaid. It really depends on your son's case, everyone shows different symtoms and needs different care.

As far as the weight gain you do want to do research on what you are giving your son. Weight is very important in the function of the body, especially with CF. I wish I could help you more with this but I don't seem to have this problem with my son. Once we gave him enzymes he has put on weight just fine.

We put sea salt in the boys bath, as I think our CFers need more salt than we actually think. I buy it in bulk at Whole Foods and put a couple scoops in.
When Caleb was only breastfed, I was very resistant to using a bottle and so was Caleb. I started putting the formula powder in a small amount of applesauce. it worked great.
Caleb is 19 months and continues with just using Apple Cider Vinegar for an acidic tummy. My oldest did have to start on Zantac at 4 and is now on Prevacid. But the longer I can keep my boys off drugs with side effects the better I feel they will be in the long run.
Please PM me with any questions...it sounds like our thought processes are the same!!!!
