Nails and Pseudomonas

Hi all...I feel like I know so many...I'm your typical lurker...: )

I don't normally post...but really felt like I could add something that may be worthwhile to think about...I know that a conversation was started on Haley's blog about artificial nails...I am the mother of a teenage CFer...prior to knowing all the dangers of wearing nails...I wore them for years...and loved it!

I am a compulsive hand-washer...and self-proclaimed neat freak...: )...during the years that I wore nails...my daughter grew out Pseudomonas off and on...as soon as I read an article about the connection between nails and bacteria...I removed them...as time goes on...I didn't really think about it again until just recently...now looking back...I am really frustrated with myself for not listening to my gut...back in 2004 I was taking a vacation and decided to have my nails done...sure enough...my daughter grew PA...fortunately...we did a 6 month cycle of TOBI and have been PA clear until January of this year...guess what??? I had my nails done over the holidays...we are clear again...but now my very active teenager has to tolerate 6 months of TOBI treatments...could it be nails??? who knows???...but in my opinion...the risk just does not outweigh the benefits...

I have read the same thing....they have definately found pa in those articficial nails. I had acrylic nails until for a few months before Zoe was diagnosed, then had them removed due to the expense, upkeep, etc... After she was diagnosed, I ran across the article about the nails having pa! I'm afraid I won't take that risk either. We had to get rid of some pets recently because I didn't do research before we got them. Come to find out they carry mycobacteria! Of couse, everything we read said it isn't passible onto humans....but we aren't willing to take that risk...so back to the pet store they went!!

Take care,

I wonder about real nails too. Any info on that?

A funny, but gross story...

My MIL makes terrific meatballs that my kids adore. Once I watched her make them so I could make them like hers. She has very long nails and mixed the meat ball mixture with her hands. AFterward she barely washed her hands before going on to make the salad. I could SEE meat still under her nails. GROSS

Needless to say we've never eaten her meatballs again

I read that too, it was something I definitely didn't know before. I always learn new things on this forum. That said, it seems almost impossible to avoid catching PA at some point in your life, but you're right, like you said - why take the risk? Personally, I type a lot, and long nails would just slow me down anyway. There are a lot of big sacrifices we make, so not getting fake nails seems pretty insignificant. Feel free to treat yourself to a manicure though, you deserve it!

Hope your daughter is doing well. (you should post more so we can get to know you too!)
