Nasal Irrigation For Kids

How many of you do nasal irrigation for your kids and when did you start? Do they have to have an understanding of what they are doing? I would think you don't want to inhale while you do it. My son is 9, but has some mental disabilities so I'm not sure he can do it without sucking it down into his lungs. Does anyone do it on their babies or young toddlers and if so how?

Like a sinus rinse? I tried it one time on my 3.5 year old. It was recommended because his colds sometimes lead to a sinus infection. I figured I'd give it a shot because Rite Aid had a sale where there was a 100% rebate on a certain brand.

He totally did not get it, and looked at me like I was trying to drown him. We'll just stick to saline nasal spray and a good nose blowing for now <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

We tried the nasal flush when Jordan was 7 after his surgery for nasal polyps and he hated it and felt like he was drowning hubby and I did it with him aswell to show solidarity but it was disgusting and you got a nasty taste in your throat even though you don't swallow. We say his ENT doctor and mentioned it and he got switched to the nasal spray with he does every day with no problems.

I tried it for the first time with DS last year when he was 4 1/2. I had purchased a sinus rinse kit for myself because of sinus headaches and noticed that DS had a really stuffy nose that no amount of saline spray and suction with the bulb syringe would get rid of. So I used it on him instead.

It worked well for him -- I had him lean over the sink and I gently squeezed the bottle, telling him to keep his mouth open and to breathe thru his mouth. Worked fine and I started gagging, almost vomited because there was sooo much nastiness that came out. He thought it was cool.

Since then we've had a few struggle convincing him to do it. We don't do it all the time, just if he's coming down with a cold or is really stuffy. He does well when he does it, but there are times when he throws a fit because he doesn't WANT to do it.
