Nebulized antibiotics

Hi Everybody,

I recently read that when nebulizing antibiotics one should not be in the presence of others unless a special filter is used on the nebulizer to keep others from inhaling the drug.

For over a year I have been nebbing colistin, and noone ever said anything to me about this. Yesterday I asked my consultant, and he said that no such precautions are necessary and that nothing will happen to my husband or kids from sitting with me while I neb the colistin.

What is your experience with this? Do you neb antibiotics with others in the room? Do you use a special filter?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

That's funny because my brother-in-law always jokes with me, telling me he's probably going to die from "second-hand nebs."

Really, though, I've never heard anybody say there's a problem with it. I do my nebs around my family and friends on a regular basis and know nothing of such filters.

I, too, have recently read that you should be cautious of others in the room. However, I've never heard of these special filters and it's not very realistic to have everyone clear out of the house when I do nebs, so I do them whenever (and in the presence of whoever) I need to. My doctors have NEVER mentioned doing anything differently.

I'd heard something about this before, years ago, but it was more in the context of using it in a hospital setting and concerns with antibiotic resistance.

DS has been on tobi off and on since he was 3 months old so one of us has always had to sit with him because he was so small.

We have always been told its not a good idea to use them without a filter. Depending on the drug your using it can also do things such as rot your curtains.
