Nebulized Colistin

I have been put on nebulized Colistin twice a day bi monthly. They were going to put me on Tobi but my airways close up and I can't breathe at all. I was wondering how well the nebulized colistin works. I am really curious about this medication and I haven't heard about anyone else being on it through the nebulizer before. Any information you can give would help. Let me know your likes and dislikes about it. Thanks very much.

Colistin is great, at least it has been for me. Everyone's going to be different, of course, but this drug has really turned me around and restored lung function I thought I had lost for good. Basically I had tried a ton of different IV drugs over the past few years, but nothing was making me better for any extended period of time... finally I said to my doc, fine, I'll try Colistin again (I had not taken it for years because the first time I took it, it had no effect)... and the results have been fantastic.

The only bad thing about it is the fact it is fizzy and sticky (also you have to mix it up yourself, but I don't see that as being too bad). I've tried everything possible to keep it from fizzing in the neb but have yet to find anything that works.

Aersolized colistin also has the added bonus of being very difficult to become resistant to - that's why a lot of docs like to put patients on it for extended periods of time.

Hope it works for you, let us know how it goes.

I've taken it nebbed for several years. I recently went off it for 4 months and had a decrease in lung function so went back on it 2Xper day in 28 day cycles.

I've recently received a script for the E-flow to use with colistyn. Apparently that keeps it from frothing so badly. I will try it in a month on my next cycle.

Does anyone else notice that when they do colistyn they cough a lot? I think it makes me cough even more than hypertonice saline. Weird.

I also can't do TOBI. I get SOB and just crappy feeling and cough and cough and can't stop.

Let us know what you think of it! Good luck! I hope its good for you! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

i'm on it with the eFlow as well. TOBI works great for me, and so does colistin. spending 8-10 minutes doing the colistin is great. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
