Tonight we spent 6 hours in the ER for his stomach. He has a history of blockages & had part of his colon removed (just read that tonite as I was going thru his Veterans records) in 1995.

He said the pain was exactly like then & he hasnt had a proper poop in a week.

They gave him 2 doses of Demerol which knocked him for a loop since he is a recovering alcoholic & hasnt had ANYTHING in his system in 13 years. They gave IV fluids & something for the nauciousness. HOWEVER: the cat scan with contrast doesnt show anything abnormal.

It was quite irritated about the wait for nothing. So he still is hurting, still naucious & will be going to his own Doctor tomorrow.

I know when I was constipated enough to throw up in the hospital they could see it with a regular abdominal xray so wouldnt that show in the cat scan?

I feel so bad for him. He doesnt make a good patient to start with & then when its painful its worse.

They told him to do the BRAT diet for the nauciousness, but that would make his bowels bind more so I was concerned about that.

He just kept saying "I will check with Linda (his doctor) tomorrow".

Anyway my issues are minor compared to his history & was wondering if this "medical is not an exact science" crap is legit <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

sounds EXACTLY like my struggles with intusuception (sp). ct scans, xrays, ultrasounds all showed nothing. i was so skinny, though, that the mass in my abdomen (upper left quadrant) was visible to the eye. still they did nothing for it besides shoot me full of demerol and send me home with vicodin.

eventually after an endoscopy (after several years of recurring episodes of intense pain), did a gastro surgeon decide to open me up and inspect the softball sized mass.

what he found that that my large intestine had developed a number of polyps in that area and it telescoped over itself - basically trying to pass itself through itself (intusuception). he was unable to manually separate the mass, so he ended up cutting out the "bad" portion and sewing the ends together.

since then i have had no troubles.

i guess the point of my story is that, while the "medical is not exact science" krapola is not an easy thing to swallow, it is, unfortunately, true. it took them six years and tens of trips to the e.r. to finally figure out what was wrong with me because nothing would show up on any of there devices (not to mention that many times, the imaging procedure was scheduled for days/weeks after the e.r. trip).

i certainly feel your hubby's pain...literally!

I'm sorry ur hubby is having this type of issue.

I havent had the GI problems but I have had a kidney stone that wasnt detected until a year later, in which they did not tell me about, and another yr later, it was realized and a contrast x-ray was done only to find my kidney was almost completely blocked. That being said, the ER is a place where things can often be over looked or miss dxed. You would think a CT would find it, but not always. He should probably see his regular doctor soon. That way he can get a more detail test, like a CT with contrast. Hope he gets better soon.

Does he ever have the opposite happen? Bouts of Diarrhea as well as the constipation? Bloody stools etc

Two things come to mind, crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis...

My best friend has Crohn's disease and she has almost as many GI problems as what I do...

Most people with Crohn's disease will have part of their intestines removed at one point or another due to blockages...

Worth a thought!
