Ok well I'm debating on wether i should get a port or not next year. I've had pic lines in the past but recently the pics havent been working and my arm got infected. My doctor said a port would be easier instead of staying in the hospital for 2 weeks you just get it at home. Im concerned with a few questions.
1) How big is the needle they use for ports?
2) Do ports hurt when they put the needle in?
3) How big is the hole?
4) Does it pop out of your chest or is it under your skin?
5) Does the port hurt or get sore if touched or bumped?
6) Is the port a inconvenience in any way?
7) Can you see the port if you're in a bathing suite or see it pop out through a shirt?
8) How long do ports last?

please help.

Ports are the greatest!. I went the PICC route and the central ine route and they were just annoying and time consuming. Also infectious. The size of the needle used depends on the mediction or if you are drwing blood etc. You can numbe the surface before the needle so it wont hurt, but I dont do that and the pain is minor and brief. You can see the port sometimes depending on how thin you are and what style shirt or bathing suit you are wearing. But who cares? You can go swimming, get wet, do anything you want. The port does not hurt if it gets bumped and in my opinion the only inconvenience is that you have to flush it once a month if you are not routinely accessing it.
I think you would love the freedom it gives you.
Good luck,
Dawn

my port is about 2-3 inches below my right collar bone and it does protrude a little. i'm not underweight by any means but it does show a little, but not too bad unless you're staring at my chest or if i stand up with my shoulders back and chest out, then it shows a lot more, but i odn't really stand like that on a normal basis <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> i would say it looks like about the size of a quarter under the skin and mine has three little dots on top that stick up above the surface of the port itself so if anything shows most of the time, its those dots (hardly noticeable.) talk to your doctor because i've known some people that got their ports placed in different places like below their breast on the ribcage or in their arm etc. so talk to them about your concerns with showing, etc. (although its really not bad) and see what other locations might be an option. my friend said that the thing with the one on your ribcage is when it was healing it seemed to take longer to heal because there is just more movement in that area with breathing, coughing etc. that kept pulling on the incision and making it heal slower.
anyway, i don't say that to scare you but so yo know there are other options!
i've had my port for about 6 months now and wish i had gotten one years ago. its SO MUCH BETTER than getting a picc everytime you needs IVs. i definitely recommend it! hope that helps you!
