Need your opinion about Pulmozyme

My son (4) has used pulmozyme daily for about 1 1/2 years now for preventative reasons...which means it's hard to say if it is keeping him healthy or if he'd be in fine shape without it. It does not take long to nebulize and has given him no ill side effects and we've had no trouble with insurance covering it, so we figure it's worth doing. Hypertonic saline is a popular alternative that has its own advocates, though some say it is addressing a different issue than pulmozyme. My son's doctor is not a big fan of HS so he's not tried it.

DS was put on it at the local cf clinic at age 2 1/2 for preventative treatment. Only thing I noticed when he first tried it was that his nose ran for the first time ever. I'd never ever seen that before because his nose boogies can be so thick and sticky.

When we asked his primary CF doctor about HTS, he wanted to wait until there were more studies conducted on younger patients. At the time the majority of the studies done were no older patients with substiantial lung function issues.

I think our local clinic has started using both on some of their patients because they do different things. One cuts/things the mucus, while the other hydrates the lungs and brings it up and out.

MY 7 year old is on albuterol and pulmozyme and we are hoping to get her on Hypertonic saline also. We finished our 56 day round of Tobi and our doctor over at (CHOC) said that pulmozyme is wonderful but really unneccessary more than 1 time a day. Ask your doctor his or her thoughts on more than 1 time a day.

Many physicians, including mine, weren't aware of the twice a day study.

Very dangerous to just take the words of doctors ..... they don't know everything and aren't right 100% of the time. It's that 1% of the time that they forget or don't know information that could make a big difference in a CFer's life.

The era is over where we accept what physicians say as gospel and believe that they can't make mistakes.
