I was diagnosed when I was months old. I never remember not knowing.
Don't hide/lie to your kid - especially about things that are affecting him.
Yet don't be too clinical (using big words he won't understand).
Don't tell him the life expectancy. I didn't know about that til I was in high school and it keeps getting older everyday - so it is not really relevant.
Answer his questions with real answers & if you don't know - say you don't and that you'll find out.
The things that's going to be the hardest to deal with is OTHER people asking your kid questions:
why are you so thin?
what are those pills for?
why do you cough so much? go home if you're sick.
etc.
