Just wish I'd started using this on him when he'd shoved that leaf up his nose last year. Bleah!

I have noticed that since we've been doing sinus rinses, that his sense of taste has improved. Around the time we started, he began to try more foods AND he started telling us his liquid meds tasted nasty, so we switched to pill form.

Shawn's ENT prescribed this treatment about a month ago, I purchased the NeilMed kit. He refuses to do it! He is convined he will just gag on the water ( the way you do when you get water up your nose while swimming )he also thinks it will burn like hell. What's the trick, what exactly do you do and what happens when you do it. He has to start doing this it's nuts. Thanks for any tips.

The neti pot/sinus rinse mega thread!

Well, one of them at least. If you want even more info, type neti pot or sinus rinse into the search box, it's something we've discussed a lot. In that thread you want to look for the video I posted, just a few posts down.

No, the water doesn't burn your nose one bit, and it doesn't feel like getting water "up your nose" at all. I haven't used the neilmed one, I use the sinucleanse neti pot which is a little different. A lot of people here could give you advice how to specifically use it though. Aha, youtube saves the day again: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LW9mvVe7Mk4 is a good video.

In that video it seems pretty much the same as a neti pot. The only thing I'd recommend is ignoring the part where they say it's ok for water to come out your mouth... if water is coming out your mouth it means you did something wrong. It should just flow out the other nostril. Also, don't suck air in your nose when you're done (like she suggested)... that WILL feel like you sucked in water up your nose, and be unpleasant. Instead, after you use all the water to rinse, lean over the sink and just blow air forcefully out your nose. That will get rid of any extra water in your sinuses and leave you feeling clear. Just blow out the water right into the sink, no kleenex or anything (the sinucleanse video demonstrates this well) then blow your nose a few times with kleenex like normal.

To get him to do it... I'd suggest getting a kit for yourself and doing it with him. I personally don't even have sinus problems unless I have a cold or something and the kit made me feel better. (basically going from feeling "just fine" to "really good"!) So even if your sinuses are fine, it wouldn't hurt you to do it.

Tell him if a 5 year old can do it, so can he. Actually, it took my son showing his grandfather how to do it, to get my FIL to finally do sinus rinses. He's had numerous infections surgeries and we'd been after him to try and he felt that snorting tap water from a wash cloth (bleah) would work just as well. DS put the squirt bottle up his nose, breathed thru his mouth and the water and nasty green & yellow boogies came out the other nostril.

Also, years ago, I tried using a bulb syringe and warm salt water years ago -- got instructions and a recipe from my ENT. I DID feel like I was drowning, it DID burn. This is sooooo easy and little or no irritation at all.

I think the key is leaving your mouth open so the water just flows. The first time I did it, I closed my mouth and got a brainfull of salt water, ugh!!!
