Nephew has been admitted...

I wanted to thank everyone for all their help and support they gave me on my recent posts. I had my little sister read all the posts last night which helped ease some of her unanswered questions and lift her spirits some. I just learned that they have admitted my nephew to hospital where we were yesturday, we all expected this and are very hopefull that now he can get the treatment he needs. I'm really looking forward to him gaining weight since he is 2 months and a mere 6lbs 9oz. I was wondering how long should we expect him to be there? (my sister is staying with him) but I'm just wondering if any of you had an ideal of how long we should expect this visit to be. Thanks again! <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

I imagine it depends upon why they admitted him. If it's just to get him started on a regimine of enzymes, different formula -- probably just a few days to get him to start gaining weight, run some tests, get a treatment plan started... If they admitted him because he's got an infection, then they could end up keeping him for a week or so if they need to give him IV antibiotics.

When DS was hospitalized after he was born, there was a 3 month old up on the CF floor who was there because her parents couldn't get her to take enzymes and therefore couldn't/wouldn't eat. They found out she hated applesauce and that a tongue depressor with bananas was the best way to adminster enzymes in her case

My sister is still breast feeding. He doesn't have an infection (he has been in and out of the ER 2 times this past week to see if he has RSV) They say his lungs are clear but he has a cough.

The length of stay would depend on what's going on with your nephew. While your sister/nephew are in the hospital, she is going to have to absorb alot of information. tell her to try not to get overwhelmed(easier said than done). It would be great if the respiratory therapist could do teaching about chest physical therapy while they are there. Also, important is for your sister not to be afraid to speak up, ask questions and ask every person touching her baby to please wash their hands first. My sister sent us a care package while my daughter was in NICU, it'll boost her spirits. Things like foods she likes(for your sis)and something you think she needs or the baby needs.

I just wanted to let you know I breastfed my daughter with CF as well, during hospital stays and she breastfed into her 3rd year of life. Things that have helped keep up milk supply under stressful situations have been; drinking plenty of water, taking a prenatal vitamin, eating oatmeal every day(I know sounds crazy but works). I also had a medela pump in style brest pump in case my daughter was unable to nurse(for example the baby couldn't nurse before a procedure, was having surgery) The hospital usually have breast pumps but I used my own cause of the germ factor. I'ld be happy to provide more info about breastfeeding a baby with Cf because I was successful at it through 3 hospitalizations(2 inculuding surgerys) so I faced many challenges. There is also Jody on this site who has a website of support for breastfeeding a baby with CF.

When my daughter was diagnosed at five weeks old she was in the hospital for 10 days. Three days to get her diagnosis and then around seven days to make sure she was gaining with the enzymes. She took breastmilk from a bottle. They increased the calories in her bottle with formula. They also taught us how to do cpt while she was there. Hopefully things will be looking a lot better for your nephew once he leaves the hospital.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 5 and Jack, 3 both with cf
