There is no "LOOK" for a CFer. You'd never pick my dd out of a lineup as a "sick" kid. Your doctor doesn't know what she is saying, a child in the negative % for growth chard should definitely be CF tested. Failure to thrive is yet another symptom.

I have no idea what kind of bloodwork she is doing, but I'd stomp my feet and throw a fit to get a referral to a CF center or switch doctors all together.

Jennifer,
There is nothing that can be tested by a "simple" blood test that will be able to tell you if your child has CF or not. There are many things that can cause poor weight gain, and they are wise to look into some or all of them.

Genetic testing is the only blood test that will tell you if she has CF or not. Most of the time doctors will order a sweat test before genetic testing is considered. A sweat test is way less invasive (not painful like obtaining blood can be) and fairly inexpensive. It is a very reasonable place to start. There is no reason to not do the sweat test if your daughter is not gaining weight.

There is no one way that CFer's look. Read this board and you will see how different the range of symptoms are. There are many people who were first tested for CF because of poor weight gain.

I hope that you find there is some simple issue with your daughter that you are able to easily fix. If you have any thoughts that she may have CF push to have her tested. Can you take her to a different doctor? Even if you tried a GI doctor, they can order the test for you.

BTW- I ditto what Mel said about numbers!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I have asked for a copy of her lab reports. I agreed to do the test because it can help rule out other problems. She also did tell me that if there were CF "markers" in her blood then she would order the sweat test. I don't know what those "markers " would be but I will wait ans see. I could take her to another Dr. but we just switched pediatricians 3 months ago and I really like this one. I was grateful that she listened and agreed to do the testing. I was afraid she would refuse. She said CF kids look sickly and mine doesn't. I know that isn't true but she also said my daughter could have only a mild case. At least we are going somewhere right now and by next week we will have the results and I will push for the sweat tests if there are no definitive answers in the blood work. Can I just make an appointment with a GI Dr. without my Dr. referring? Thanks again,

PS I really hope she doesn't have CF but if she does it will be great to have such a wonderful, caring support system like on here.
