Night-time Coughing

My 2 year old has a terrible cold. She's never really been sick, just the sniffles once or twice, but nothing like this. During the day she's fine, a little crabby, but still energetic. But during nap and night time, she's coughing terribly.

Is there anything I can do to help? Positioning in the bed? Should I get her up in the middle of the night for an albuterol and vest treatment?

What do you do when your kids have a cold and can't sleep because they're coughing. I would love your wisdom! Thank you!

When DS has had colds in the past, I usually steam up the bathroom really good before bed and let him play in the tub for quite awhile. Then before bed give him his regular cpt/vest treatment. If his nose is stuffed up, attack him with saline and the booger sucker while he's in the bathtub. Then do an extra treatment in the middle of the night. Usually the coughing wasn't what kept him up though, mainly a stuffy nose.

The other night his nose was stuffed up and he kept coughing a dry cough. DH was out of town and DS was sleeping with me in our bed. I have him a couple drinks of water from a sippy cup with a straw in the middle of the night -- he slept thru it. We recently started doing sinus rinses on him and the next morning I had him do one and got a lot of that nastiness out, although froggy's probably too young to start doing that -- DS is 4 1/2.

My daughter struggles with night time coughing. My son never has. I get up with my daughter and give her a treatment as difficult as it is getting out of bed. But it does help her stop coughing. I also prop a few pillows up and try to sitting a bit upright. One thing that always helps is a round of prednisolone (steroid) if necessary. Hope she feels better soon.

I used to cough at night and my parents would bring me some cough medicine (especially with a cold). It always took care of it so I could get back to sleep. Some people are against giving cough suppressant, but I think it's great because sleep is just as important - and a lot of times it's more of a nagging irritating cough than one that's productive. I think just some cold medicine should do the trick until she's out of the woods with the cold. She might need extra CPT during the day if she's junky, but I wouldn't bother during the night. She needs her rest. If she's wheezy or tight, albuterol would help though.

I notice that if I'm up coughing in the night (not due to a cold) I just sit up, take a drink of water, and blow my nose...and I can usually just fall right back to sleep without coughing anymore. A lot of times the cough just lingers because I'm sleeping/dreaming and I don't even know I'm coughing. Once I wake up I can control it usually.

Good luck and hope she feels better <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
