No scent

Hello everyone,

I am a 26 year old male and have been very recently diagnosed with CF. I have a mild form of CF. Basically I only have a cough and from age 1 to ~ 21 I required lots of surgery's to remove nasal polyps.

I am wondering if it is common among people with CF that they have no scent? I have never been able to smell anything my whole life. Luckily my taste is OK. I'm also wondering if this problem is treatable? I have asked my doctor this question many times but he says it isn't. I'm wondering if you all could tell me more about this.

I've never been able to smell anything either. I've only had one sinus surgery and it helped for a few months, but that was about it.

the majority of CF patients also have allergy problems. phsyicians tend to be so focused on bacterial manifestations of CF, instead of treating the whole body, so often allergies go untreated.

i had sinus problems for years (4-5 sinus infections a year) and i would also have a dry hacking cough from post-nasal drip. i would cough so hard that i would throw up.

i got allergy tested (skin test, not IgE test in the blood), started allergy shots, took a daily anti-histamine, and avoided my allergens. I haven't had a sinus infection in 4 years and i don't cough so hard that I throw up any more.

Warwick speaks to untreated allergies often as well.

LOL, I always tease my husband because he can smell almost nothing. I'll get home sometimes and cassie, who has a bit of reflux, will smell like sour milk (no matter how much you wipe that kids face, use a fresh bib....) but Mark has no clue. I think it's kind of funny, but yes, this does seem to be very common

I can't smell anything either. I was diagnosed with CF at birth and have had 3-4 sinus surgeries. I don't quite remember. My nose and sense of smell are shot. I can only smell really strong, bad smells. That's it.

Hi,
if you had lots of nasal polyps removals, this could be the reason for it. Probably you have been able to smell, but the surgeries destroyed something...

I don't have CF, my son does, but I can't smell either. It has to be a really bad strong smell for me to be able to smell it. Just wanted to say I know it stinks not being able to smell! Ha ha. I would love to smell my shampoo or a perfume, or smell to see if my shirt smells sweaty or whatever. It sucks.
