I don't have CF, my son does, but I can't smell either. It has to be a really bad strong smell for me to be able to smell it. Just wanted to say I know it stinks not being able to smell! Ha ha. I would love to smell my shampoo or a perfume, or smell to see if my shirt smells sweaty or whatever. It sucks.

My wife's best friend, who does not have CF, has had polyps removed from her nose on three occasions now, she still suffers bad from them and she can not smell either. Maybe its the polyps and not the Cf that affects the smell.

I lost my sense of strong smells after my transplant. I also had my first and last sinus surgery. I only would smell alcohol and if I had a pseudo infection from my sinuses.

Last week, I decided to think that if I believe I will be able to smell again it will happen. I just started set an intention to see if would come true. Yesterday for the first time during a massage, I asked the massage therapist if there was a smell of peppermint. She said she had it in the room. I was so happy and shocked at the same time. That was the last time I smelled anything. My sinuses are pretty clear and now i am total believer in what you manifest will come true.

Now i am going to tell my husband when he farts to leave the room. lol

I'd have to agree with dyza that the polyps have something to do with the sense of smell. I'm not sure if repeated polyp removal would have anything to do with it, though.
I was without the sense of smell, taste, and even being able to breath through my nose for several years before I had my polyp surgeries done. I had to go in two times, the second time was the biggest, and was done about six months after the first.
After everything healed, I was able to taste, and smell things right away. It was amazing what familiar tastes I went so long without.
The surgeries were at least 25 years ago, and I had no problems since then. I would get occasional sinus congestion, and short-term loss of senses for taste and smell, but they would eventually come back. Even when I had a few allergy attacts, or was suffering from seasonal allergeis, my senses would eventually return.
I found recently, that gargling with some sort of Japanese brand Iodide diluted in warm water, and running it through my nose really seems to do a job on keeping the senses intact.
I'm surprised how many other CF'rs don't have a sense of smell, do you all also lack the sense of taste, too? My senses are keen enough to even distinguish when Fall, or Spring is in season, and even be able to tell when a bad rainfall is coming, soon! I can catch the smell of a cigarette almost 100 meters away, and will avoid that asap!
I do hope there is a method to bring back the sense of smell, I'm sure it does have an effect on the sense of taste, and when those senses are not working, you're missing a lot!

The polyp removal does not always make you loose the possibility to smell, but sometimes it does.
I did also have over 40 polyp surgeries, but I got no problems.

I dont think its always polyps. When I went to the ENT he said I have good sinuses for a Cfer, but yet my scense of smell stinks at times (no pun intended). Certain things I can smell & certain things I can. I havent quite connected what makes the difference. Maybe meds can cause it....

Before I had polyps removed when I was 13 or so, I couldn't smell or taste very well at all. As soon as they were gone, everything smelt so strong again. I was amazed! My polyps are gradually coming back and my sense of smell is getting slightly worse, so that's definitely what causes it for me.

I agree with Melissa.
I've never had any sinus surgeries & once I had an ENT specialist exam my sinuses due to headaches & he said that I had some of the best sinuses of any of the CF patients he has seen.
I haven't been able to smell since my late 20's-early 30's. I would love to know why this happens too.
Also, my sense of taste isn't as good as it once.
