I agree with Melissa.
I've never had any sinus surgeries & once I had an ENT specialist exam my sinuses due to headaches & he said that I had some of the best sinuses of any of the CF patients he has seen.
I haven't been able to smell since my late 20's-early 30's. I would love to know why this happens too.
Also, my sense of taste isn't as good as it once.

I have lost my ability to smell .... maybe 10-12 years ago. I'm guessing it happened gradually. Consequently, I can't tell if there is something that might trigger coughing - perfume, intense cleaning products, new construction - so I am vulnerable. Sometimes someone with me will alert me to a possible problem. I wish I could wear a smell detector necklace thingie that would go off when there is danger in the air! so I have this Pollyanna-ish idea that something I will do will help bring it back - oregano oil in sinus rinse, sinus surgeries ... does anyone have any other ideas? People assume that I can't taste because I can't smell. Perhaps I've lost that too?

Hi,

I used to have trouble with scent too. Always had sinus headaches, post nasal drip, etc. Then someone told me about nasal irrigation. It has helped me tremendously. I can smell pretty good, allergies are better, sinus headaches and post nasal drip are gone.

The funny thing is I never noticed anything wrong with my taste. Now, things are tasting too salty to me, whereas before I put salt on anything, even ham! I guess my taste wasn't as good as I thought it was.

In case you are wondering about the nasal irrigation, I use a device called the Grossan HydroPulse, which I got off of an allergy site. You can also just buy their irrigation tips to put on a waterpik. The whole unit was $99, but you can print out an insurance reimbursement form, which my insurance did cover.

hope this helps!

You probably have sinus problems Michiel. Either polyps, infections, or even a deviated septum. Deviated septums run in my family and several of my family members can't smell either. I have a deviated septum, but the only times in my life that I can't smell is when I have a sinus infection or severe allergy attacks in fall. Having a deviated septum can increase the severity of allergies and sinus infections. I went to the ENT doctor last spring and he discovered this as my problem and wanted to do surgery b/c I had a bad sinus infection when I saw him and didn't even realize it. He said I probably am so used to having sinus infections that my body barely recognizes when I have one. I am putting off the surgery until after this baby is born, so I'll have it done next fall. He'll remove one polyp I have and fix my deviated septum.
Thats just my story.

If I were you, I'd see a good ENT (an ear nose and throat specialist, in case you didn't know). They really specialize in this. As Amy said above, many cf doctors put off more minor issues in Cf bc they are so focused on the big ones. But these "minor" issues sometimes aren't really minor and can really upset your life. You never know-you could go see an ENT and they could find a problem you didn't realize you had (like me), fix it, and boom-you feel better, and even your cf could get a little better. Healthy sinuses do mean less lung infections.

I am "hard of smelling" and I've had nasal polyps and surgeries also (last one in '85). As of today, I have a tiny polyp but very minor.

I asked my doctor about this also, if it's related. He said it may or may not be related. He said many CFers have this problem. I also have allergies, but so do millions of people, who don't have cf, yet they CAN smell. So I doubt it has to do so much with the allergies (though I'm sure it doesn't help).

I wish I knew if there were a solution - I would love to be able to smell everything.

I can smell some, but I have to put my nose right up to something and sniff, sniff, sniff.
