Non Sedated CT Scan for 4yo

My son had a CT scan when he was 5. They told me it would be ok to try without sedation (I thought he would do fine) and then sedate him if needed. I explained everything to him...but when we got in there and he saw the machine, he was so scared (I don't know why), he begged me to have them put him to sleep. He was already going to get stuck with a needle anyway because they were using contrast with him. Anyway, I would say try it without if that is what you feel comfortable with.

We thought we'd try with our 5yo and we discussed it ahead of time with Radiology at the Children's Hospital. They said fine but when we got there, they were totally against it. She had to hold her breath for the scan and they didn't want to take the chance of getting her in there and then finding she couldn't do it and had to be sedated. It takes some time for the sedation to take affect and they didn't want the machine time or their time taken. Lots of arguments later, they sedated her. We ended up taking more time than if we'd just sedated her in the first place.

Bottom line...be sure the Radiology staff is willing to try and be prepared for them to nix it when you get there.

DS has his first CT scan when he was about 3 and he did fine. DH stood at his head and I stood at his foot next to the "giant donut". When he was about 4 he had to have a scan which included his inhaling a radioactive isotope. He did GREAT as well. Sat on DH's lap and inhaled stuff via a nebulizer/mouthpiece. Then laid on the table and watched a dvd while having different areas of his body scanned. He asked us several times when he got to go back. Little weirdo!

We did plan his first scan around nap time, hoping he'd be sleepy.

I would definately try the non-sedated ct. My daughter did it at 4.5 years old and on our way there, I told her what it would be like (lying still on a flat table that goes through something that looks like a big donut) and the thing that helped her feel good about it the most was me doing a fake CT Scan to show her what was going to happen. I laid on the table and the tech moved it through the donut for my dd to watch. Maybe showing him a youtube video might help too.

Hope it goes well and that you get good results!
