I cultured out Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC) about three years ago. It really kicked my butt when I had it. After a bronch I had a fever of 104 for a full week. I was treated with a six week course of antibiotics, and got better. It cultured out about two more times, but the infection was never as bad as that first time.
I have not cultured out MAC for a year and a half now. Having a PICC does stink, especially in the summer. Have you ever considered having him get a port? I got mine about four years ago and I can't imagine being without it.
I can swim with it, and I can administer all my IV therapy myself. Anyhow, good luck with everything!!! I hope your son feels better soon!!

I cultured MAC on two separate occasions; once in 2002 which was treated with oral antibiotics and then again in 2005. Since the MAC had reappeared the 2005 treatment involved intensive, 18 month long IV antibiotics and monthly cultures. Overall, I felt pretty bad before the IV treatment began and was cognizant of all the risks associated with such a long IV treatment. However, the benefits outweighed the negatives. I did suffer some hearing loss in my right ear due to the effects of Amikacin IV and was switched over to nebulized Ami at about the 12 month stage. I had no problems with the q6 cefoxitin treatment. I finally cultured negative in April of 2006 and subsequently continued treatment for another 12 months just to provide a knockout punch... Since that time, I have yet to test positive for MAC again.

I cultured MAC on a bronch about 20 months ago only after my PFT's had dropped by about 20%. I took 3 oral ABX for 18 months to get rid of it. They tested for it 12 months later using a bronch (since it had never shown up on sputum cultures). After the bronch (with lavage was clear) then I continued ABX for another 6 months. I took Rifampin, Azithromycin and Ethambutol. The Abx were very hard on my digestive system and really made me exhausted. I'm starting to bounce back now and my PFT's are coming back up. ~Juliet
